To rip out my factory NAV or not?

I want to build a nice sound system and am not sure I can get it by leaving the stock system in place and "rca'ing" into clean after market amps and speakers. If you folks think I can go this route let me know. I love the NAV and backup camera and clean look. I want to add mp3 and XM. With the stock head unit that means adding a separate XM and MP3 player and then FM modulating it in or going through one of those CD-Changer Plug Add-in’s. This can work but I am not sure how nice the MP3 and XM will be that way. I am also not sure how nice everything will sound running off the stock head unit. Right now I just wish for allot more bass (factory sub SUCKS! I am not wanting show quality sound, just nice clean sound and more bass. If you folks think this will work let me know. I would use my audio control EQ, Soundstream Class –A amps, MB Quart separates and Boston Pro sub (already own it all) to do most of this. IF you thin this will work let me know.

Obviously plan B is rip everything out and start new. If I do this though what is the likelihood of being able to hook in the stock backup camera and stock GPS antenna?

Have you thought of replacing the stock headunit with a Scion head unit like many of the guys over at toyota-4runner.org have done? I did it too and it is a HUGE improvement -- not to mention the fact that it is now XM ready, and plays mp3s. It fits in flawlessly - plugs right in to the stock head unit plugs ... really, it's just pulling out the old one, and putting in the new one. You would be AMAZED at the difference it makes ... not to mention how cool it is to be able to play mp3s and get xm. :)

here are links to some of the discussions (oh, and you can get a single disc or 6 disc ... unless you have the JBL 10 speaker system in which case it won't work):

ooohhh purdy! that looks great. very stock looking but not as plain. didnt know pioneer makes the scion deck. I like their aftermarket headunits so I believe you when you say these are pretty good. looks like it would fit right into a 3rd gen too. wonder if the wiring is the same?

r0cky 09-20-2004 05:34 PM

henry, lemme check, i thought i recalled someone talking about that somewhere ... i'll find it.

r0cky 09-20-2004 05:44 PM

well ... from what i'm reading over at t4r, it doesn't sound like the scion would fit in a 3rd gen unless you bought the scion kit (i assume for wiring purposes) and there is some question as to if it's necessary to cut something on the dash. there wasn't much info, and certainly nothing was conclusive other than the fact that you'd need a scion kit to hook it all up properly. :dunno:

r0cky...What's involved in adding an XM antenna to that HU? If it's not too difficult, you should certainly do it! Way worth it!

Btw, it looks pretty awesome in there!

r0cky 09-20-2004 07:32 PM

sorry gapguy, but i have no idea how to add the xm antenna to the HU - for the most part, the cds with 100+ mp3s on each one keep me pretty satisfied as far as song diversity. :D

XM is awesome though. i just haven't had the time or funds to invest in it quite yet.
