Need Advice- sub or replacements??

PREFACE: I'm not an audiophile. I'm not looking to dump a lot of $$ and I like a little bass, but don't want the fillings in my teeth coming out.

THE SHORT: Are the OEM speakers decent, (99 Highlander) or should they be replaced?

THE LONG
So I got a Kenwood double DIN head unit and was hoping for a better sounding system. Not much difference..I got a 10" powered sub that would fit in nicely in the back beside my tool box.

But if I could just replace the OEM door speakers and get decent results, I'd rather, to save a little $$ and space in the back (plus I wouldn't have to worry about my dog kicking in the woofer.

So would it make sense to do the replacement or the sub for decent sound and bass?

I've got a Kenwood head-unit DPX-MP4070 and a Kenwood sub KSC-WD250
I wouldn't be dropping a lot of coin on replacement speakers (staying under $80 a pair).

Thoughts??

thanks,

Kurt

just remember that you can have the greatest head unit in the world and OK speakers and it'll sound OK, and you can have an OK head unit and the greatest speakers and it'll sound great.

What kind of improvement are you looking for?

My dad has a highlander, and I like it. If it were me, I'd invest in an amp and replace the door speakers. They don't have enough midbass for me. I like to be able to distinguish the kick of a drum from the regular bass of a 10inch subwoofer.

Not really sure what brands are really good, but a buddy got this set of components for his 04 4runner and they were a definate improvement. He also added this amp.

Replace the front door speakers and put a decent amp on the sub and you will really be surprised by the great sound. I bought Blaupunkt 6 3/4 components for $59. from Crutchfield and I love them in the front doors. They are running off my Kenwood headunit power and sound great. I run a Kenwood 12" sub in back with a Rockford Fosgate amp. Lots of bass and clarity. Just my 2 cents.

Holy cow!!!!! I just checked and the Blaupunkt 6 3/4 components are down to $35.99 a pair!!!! Jump on it!!!!!

I saw your other thread on these...how much commission do you get? :spam1:

Just kidding! Thanks for the heads up. I think that's the route I'm gonna take..I think I'll prolly end up keeping the powered sub too...

More soon,

Kurt

I just like the price and the way they came out. I get a little enthusiastic sometimes. :)

I just got done chatting with Crutchfield - it'd be doable, but definitely a "custom install" as they put it. I'd need to fabricate a bracket/spacer. Still for the price...

It is very easy....trust me. The templates for the spacers are here, I took them to a friend who cut them for me. Then just mounted the speakers, very easy.

You said the templates for the spacers are "here" - where's that? Do you have a write-up on your install?

thx!
Kurt

Well crap...the website that had the wood template drawings is not there anymore. Let me see if I can find the PDF file and email it to you.

Anyone out there still have it for him in case I can't find it??? If you do then we need to host it here for future needs.

FOUND THEM!!!! Let's PLEASE make them part of our tech section here.
