low fidelity: can my 01 4Runner power some aftermarket cones?
 

Hi all,

I have the stock setup in my 01 4Runner, 4 x ~6" door speakers w/ 2 tweeters in the front. IMO the sound is pretty muddled and really lacks bass. I'm looking for a simple upgrade of the stock system that hopefully does not include a head unit and amp. I'd really just like to replace the stock cones with some decent aftermarket units. I'm not looking for big bass or amazing sound, just something that is a notch above stock.

I've been searching to see if I could find out what RMS my stock head unit puts out to get an idea if it has anywhere near enough power to run a set of aftermarket speakers. I've been reading reviews on crutchfield about the Blaupunkt TSC 660 (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-gE2dnLO...fo&i=023TSC660) and some have said they had good results on hooking these up to their stock head units (other vehicles).

My questions:

1) Am I dreaming here, or can I get a decent upgrade in sound by just replacing the stock speakers?

2) Any tips on simply replacing the stock door speakers and tweeters? Crutchfield says the 6 3/4" inch components are direct replacements for the front, but the 1" tweeters need some custom work to fit in.

3) Crutchfield didn't say anything about rear door replacements. Will the 6 3/4" be a direct replacement for the rear doors as well?

1) yep, you can get MUCH more enjoyment from your music by replacing the speakers.

One set is going into a 1994 Honda Accord LX that BADLY needs it. Its going to be powered by a Profile amp that I pickedup for $30 yesterday :great:

The other set is going into a 1993 Lexus LS400. The stock 4" speakers are gonna be used as a loose screw magnet around the garage :saw:
