Video Section

so im sitting/laying here on the couch in florida, 1000's of miles away from my yota. I don't have a vehicle built for trails, yet have a serious itch to get dirty.
knowing that i dont have the means to do that, i think to myself, "i'll just watch videos from other members trips". soon after the idea, i realize that i have to sift and search thru alot of post to find videos.

why dont we have a area designated for people to put videos? im not up on the 411 on how website work and what not, don't know limitations and what all would have to be done to achieve this idea. maybe this has already been brought up and was explained in depth about why we don't do that and thats fine......i was just wondering. can't go do any real wheeling, so i'll stick with the web-wheeling, just looking for some spotters!

NCSU-4runner May 25, 2005 09:18 AM

i 2nd the idea

green91runner May 25, 2005 09:25 AM

i 3rd it.. great idea, would be pretty easy to add a section for that.

86runner May 30, 2005 04:44 PM

Definently. allow us to see the true capability of others rigs.

lee May 31, 2005 07:07 PM

if we found a place to host them, this would be a great idea.

i dont think yt should host them.. thatd be way to much bandwidth

EWAYota May 31, 2005 07:17 PM

i don't know how we host them here, im guessing people are hosting them on they're own websites, but they put a link here for us to click. if we just had a section where we could put just the links, then that would work, no need to host them, if we're not doing that anyways.

Great idea. Do another pledge drive and raise the money for more server space. I'm in.

is that what it would take? for this to work, would yotatech have to serve as the host? or couldn't we just do the usual click here to see my video
and it take you to they're website as host? or is that not how it works? when you click on a video link like the one here previously from slick rock, and when you click it, it dl's.....is that because yotatech is hosting it, or what?

i just think if people have these videos hosted on they're own webspace, but are just posting a link here for it, why can't we have a section designated for videos? i know we have some good videos on this forum, but searching for them isn't the easiest task, i've tried. im just thinking.

I think the problem is that in order to have a decent vid section, we are going to need the hosting space because people are going to need/want to upload vids. I don't know much about web design/management either, but my understanding is that if too many people click on a link without "right click save as" it will exceed the designated bandwidth and the vid will go down. So, my thought is to somehow allow people a certain amount of vid space here on YT, and if that involves a charge or something, then cool. Maybe Corey and Chris could see how much it would be, then have a pledge drive. With over 10K members, I bet we could get some decent $$ quick.

Corey May 31, 2005 07:44 PM

Sorry guy's, vid space can not happen here.
You would not believe how much GB in bandwidth that takes.
It could double our bill or more.

Ya gotta host them yourself.
If you are on cable, Comcast provides you with up to 5 or 7 accounts, and each web account can hold around 20 MB.

How do you think I have been hosting all the UT2004 vids as of late :D

There are sites that do host vids for free.

EWAYota, currently all links that are click here to see my video are not using yotatech's bandwidth, it downloads from whatever server its on, as for hosting.. everyone should have a set webspace through their ISP, you can pay for extra bandwidth per month if you REALLY want everyone to see it. as for the 'right-click, save as' the only reason that saves on bandwidth is if a person wants to watch it numerous times, if they just care to watch it once, then clicking on it normally won't be any different then downloading it.

a great way to do this would be to make the videos into torrents, so when you download them, you share them, splitting the bandwidth amongst all YT'ers saving the hosts a bit, and drastically speeding up download times.

just a thought.

86runner May 31, 2005 07:50 PM

i agree with the here's my video idea. it would be like people using photobucket for their pics.

EWAYota May 31, 2005 07:50 PM

ok, so you have to host them yourself, thats fine. everyone who has put videos up here hosts them on a different site, and then we click the link and go there. could it be possible to have just another section then were people can post these links, maybe a branch off of the trail reports or something? yotatech doesn't have to host them, but if there was a section we could organize all the videos into, then that would still be cool. i totally understand the bandwith/cost issue.

A friend does this with his subscription website. The rule is that uploads must be in Flash, encoded with Wildform FX that makes a tidy file and is available in a free demo version.

For example, a five minute video would be a 30Mb .wmv file or a 64 Mb Camtasia file or a 2Mb Wildform file, I'm told. With the price of high quality 3CCD digicams below $500 and the new Google video d/l pay-per-view service, it's a potential gravy train I'm jumping on soon.

problems ive seen in the past with attempts to create video sections is that when someone runs out of bandwidth / space on their host, they delete one video, and replace it with their new one.. thus making a bad link.

just throwing things out, not trying to discourage

i like this idea.

that would happen anyways if it was posted in a different section. it happens with photos as well. The whole idea that i had behind this thought wasn't for yotatech to host the videos, but just to have a section where people can post links to the videos. i enjoy watching videos, and i don't know how many we have on this site, lets say 45. you type in Video in the search, and you get 500 threads. 500 threads to sift thru to find 45 videos, ugh:bang:

this would just make it easy to sift thru and watch videos.......and if your like me, and don't get a chance to go out very often, watching a video of a truck or runner similar to yours wheelin puts a smile on your face and makes the itch even itchier to go!

That wouldn't be a problem if the person who posted the video (who ran out of bandwidth) would remove their link from where it was posted.

Glenn Jun 1, 2005 01:07 PM

I think it is a great idea to have a video link section. My website allows 10GB per month. I have no idea how much bandwidth would be used if it were downloaded many times on this site. I guess it depends on how popular the video is.

Maybe we could have a video section with links that expire and are deleted automatically (or by an admin) at the end of a month. If someone wanted to rehost it, they could just repost a new link. I know what is involved; it's just a copy/paste of the link once it is on the host website. That way, bandwidth could more easily be managed on the host's website and help to reduce or elminate bad links.

Well?

Why isn't their one yet? Make a sticky saying you must host your own video and must update with a new link if the old one runs out or delete thread. This is almost a year ago and still nothing.

What does it take to put one up on Google video? Do they host any or just links? I have my own space to store if I ever do, but I'm curious about the Google route.
I also like the idea of a Video Link section.
