censoredness

on another forum i'm on, in your personal profile, you can check or uncheck the "leave words uncensored" option.

i think that would be a good idea here.

TDiddy 09-16-2004 04:26 AM

What exactly does this do?

calrockx 09-16-2004 06:28 AM

[ ] Leave Words Uncensored

if you don't check the option, things would be like they are on the board now. if someone says "f---" it'll show up as ÅÅÅÅ, same with any other censored words.

[/] Leave Words Uncensored

if you do check this option, whatever words someone puts in their replies will show up on your screen when you're logged in under your name.

it's not that i'm after seeing a bunch of bad words, but i think it's nice for the user to have this control over the board settings. on that forum, this option is found under account settings.

Flygtenstein 09-16-2004 07:56 AM

And here I thought there was no swearing at YT.

dude, do you not get it?

right now, there's not. well if you do, it's changed to those funky letters.

with the idea i'm suggesting, there's only swearing if you choose to let it through.

it just seems better to leave it up to the user. that way those that choose to leave it censored will never have to worry about seeing a swear word show up on their screen. right now, there's still a few questionable words that will still show.
those that don't care will see the unfiltered version of all posts.

Bob_98SR5 09-16-2004 01:02 PM

cal,

the prob that i have w/ that option is that it will allow people to use bad language as adjectives in personal attacks and for people who leave it on the uncensored option, may lead to flaming

i like it how it is right now :)

Pssstt... Charles, I think Flyg is joking...

:P

Corey 09-16-2004 05:00 PM

Our current software does not have this feature :D

calrockx 09-16-2004 05:43 PM

ah robinhood, the subtleties of the internet. darn not being able to tell sarcasm sometimes. :pat:

bob, you may have a point. and yeah i knew it was a fake word, but it sounded funny so i used it.

corey, that's a shame.

oh well, i just thought it was cool feature, thought it'd put it in the suggestion box. :D

Tacoma Dude 09-16-2004 08:30 PM

Oh jeez... if only!
A filter would be awesome... that damned "˟˟˟˟" word is getting on my nerves :bang:

Flygtenstein 09-17-2004 09:45 AM

I get it.

Right now we can type "ÅÅÅÅ you you ÅÅÅÅing ÅÅÅÅ" and no one can see what was really typed except me. Chuck is advocating allowing the individual to see profanity at his or her discretion based on having this box click enabled.

I think the absence of profanity may add class.

calrockx 09-17-2004 09:56 AM

ya...guess this idea works better on some forums than others. not a problem.

on that forum, it hasn't resulted in flaming too much. and it is a younger crowd. it's different here, so like bob said, i could see some flaming going on.

X-AWDriver 09-17-2004 10:26 AM

Is this really an issue;I don't believe this board is that sensitive and this board is one of the most "clean" boards I've been on.

I think people on this board police each other fine and people that are offended by this board must be a bunch of pussies;and that is another word for cats. ;)

(haha,it's a joke to those who might be offended)

Flygtenstein 09-17-2004 07:16 PM

Without using Google, who knows what the sign is that replaces each letter in the profanity? Sorry, it is the nerd in me coming out.

There are people here who can constructively and productively use profanity to make points and place emphasis. There are also baffoons who would stand firmly upon cussing as a cruch to bear the striking weakness of his or her current vocabulary.

I still say, "ÅÅÅÅ you you ÅÅÅÅing ÅÅÅÅ." :D

Corey 09-17-2004 07:25 PM

And can anyone tell me where the Å symbol comes from ;)

Hint: 35 minutes from now PST it will be on your screen, and I do not mean this screen.

calrockx 09-17-2004 07:30 PM

My understanding is that it predated the show.

I will hit a solid answer later.
