Solution for e-brake cable on lifted first gen?

My e-brake cable seems too short for the travel my 1989 4runner has on the rear suspension. I'm running 4 inch marlin rear springs and the e-brake cable looks pretty unhappy at rest, let alone at full droop.

Can I lengthen the cable? Shoot, I have to lengthen the e-brake arms anyway. Maybe I can get fancy and build an L shaped extension to handle the height issue (thick pack+ rotated housing) and the length issue.

Tell me about what you did!

I am choosing to retain some kinda e-brake solution so "just cut it off" isn't a good answer for me. (but thanks anyway.)

most people go with the trans brake. I has better holding power on inclines and gets rd of the lines on the axle. Marlin, Sky, All-Pro and a few other make one.

Loosen/relocate the e-brake cable clamps as they run along the back of the frame.

Then you can put a spacer on top of the axle:

and extend the e-brake levers to match:

I run the stock cable on mine, and even have the front crossmember where the cable attaches lifted 3" (rasing the gas tank the same) and it works fine.

I have a line-lock on my 83.

Roger has it spot on. Very easy to do and should accommodate 5" of lift easy.

Thanks folks. The e-brake cable along the frame...Is that a drop fuel tank thing?

I cut the old pivot mount off the axle and welded on a taller one out of .25 bar stock. Still need to lengthen the levers a little bit to get them off the springs (they barely touch)
