Rookie Welder

so im taking a metal class at school and i love it. we have a full shop and bays to take our trucks in and work on them at lunch. just wondering about some nifty things you guys have fabbed up for your truck that dont require a huge amount of skill. (i do have experienced fabbers to help me though if need be)

ideas would be awesome

thanks

custom sliders should be pretty easy.

Mic09dcsm 02-25-2009 02:52 PM

Rear shock location movement, rock sliders, light bar, steps, front "bull" bar...

parkkicks 02-25-2009 03:12 PM

sweet thanks guys. i already have nerf bars, and im not a fan of light bars above the cab, but a bull bar would be sweet. i will have to scour the net for some pics.

my truck does not have the factory tow hook on it so i was thinking some sort of front recovery point. any thoughts there?

recovery points are always good to have :)

chevy 63" leaf spring swap anybody?

Gerdo 02-26-2009 06:03 PM

Pull off the nerf bars, they will just fold up into the body and do damage if you hit them. Build some sliders.

Next build a front and rear bumpers. I build a front bumper using the Trail Gear, Front Bumper Winch Mount (scroll down toward the bottom) It isn't for a 3rd gen but I modified it to make it work. It is a good starting place.

Skids.

what to fab

you should cage in your whole truck. haha just kidding!

Build yourself a welding/cutting table. Start simple and make good 90 corners.

You can also try fabbing up some tubular doors..a tool box for your bed...and im sure you can just buy tow hooks for the front since your missing yours. But a custom bumper(front/rear) would be what i would be after if i was you. You can save big bucks making your own.

make a front receiver, so you can put a D shackle in it. Spare tire mount, highlift/shovel mount, battery box, a few ideas

algranger 04-29-2009 10:07 AM

I made i hilift mount its handy cause you dont have to dink around with bolts

Also clevis mounts would be pretty easy heres how i made mine

Or start fabbing SAS parts if you plan to do that

Yea I made a jack mount on my bull bar for the 4runner and one in the bed of my chevy right on the tool box. If you want to get more creative, make a swing spare tire carrier tailgate door in replace of your tailgate.
like this

and to add on to that, ive even seen some where the tire flips up and down (vertically) while the swing door is still closed, so you can have room for when your hauling more stuff

yoterr 05-04-2009 03:26 PM

i like that idea ^^ and just fab up a rear bumper would be pretty cool
