A few A340F questions...
 

These may be silly questions but here goes.

(For a PreRunner > 4WD conversion.)

Q1. Are all A340F transmissions created equal? For a donor tranny would it matter if it came from a regular cab, extended cab or double cab? What about differences from year to year--any general guidelines? I assume the engine it was attached to should match mine--5VZ-FE.

Googling around this morning I see the A340F mentioned in the context of 4Runners and T100s. (Although I am not sure how much I trust the info quoted below--afterall they spelled Tacoma TOCOMA.)

Q2. Can the A340E ECU be used on the A340F? Or, is the A340F a true bolt-on replacement?

Q3. Can the A340F be run as a 2WD only--e.g. no propellor shaft? I'd like to do my conversion in stages to eliminate problems. From a high level I'm thinking of replacing the transmission first (also installing a transfer case, modifying the rear drive shaft and whatever else...), then run it for a while to make sure all the bugs are worked out before I move on to the rest.

I am by no means a Toyota autotranny expert so I offer this discaimer:

A1. The tranny itself doesn't know what it was put in. An A340F from a shortbed will be the same as an A340F from a doublecab.

A2. I believe that the only difference between an A340E and an A340F is that one is 4wd and thus has a different tailpiece. Internally they are the same.

A3. No harm at all running without a front driveshaft.

sorry for a bit of off topic, but are you going solid axle conversion or IFS?

Sticking with IFS... it's a PreRunner > 4WD conversion.

Never understood 2wd 4Runners. When they first came out in '84, Toyota made this big to-do about how the "4" in 4Runner meant 4wd :bang:

What about transfer cases for the A340F--is there one transfer case? Would a A340F+tcase combo from a T100 work in a Tacoma? Or maybe Tacoma > Tacoma would be OK but not T100/4Runner > Tacoma.

Clearly I don't quite know my way around down there yet. ;) I have to assume that the transfer case lines up with whatever hole(s) that may exist in the body (or maybe there are just outlines for holes stamped in the sheet metal), along with any mounting brackets and whatever else.

All I know is that some A340's have a separate transfer case (later years?), some A340's have an integral one. Marlin's site has a bit of information about them because those with integral t-cases have to swap trannies in order to go dual cases.

The auto trans from 95 and below use hydraulic for the transfercase. It's a one piece unit.
the 3rd gen runner can be seperate. Marlin put a few crawler gear in the t-case on those.
If you plan to have crawler gear and auto trans, get the a340f.

I have a friend..2nd gen. runner with auto trans. when he's on a hill, he notice that when the engine shuts off, the transfer case is no longer in 4 wd mode even though the stick is still in 4 low. It turns out when the engine is no longer running, the hydraulic is not working so it pop out of 4wd.
