Best Way to Build a rear Steer?
 

ok i am lookin for a rear axle with 4 way steer on it if any body nos any where i can find 1 or a site how to may them i can i have tons of axles cause i am wanting 4 way steer on my 88 so please help me

Are you wanting to do rear steer or do a 4-way rear steering that turns normal as well as tip vertically as well?

thats called quadrasteer. some gmc trucks have it... maybe go to the dealership and check it out...

I dont think Gm's qudrasteer is a full lock steering, only an assist.


For converting im not sure. A front axle is a passenger side drop while the rear is in the middle. Im thinking you'll have to add knuckles and such to a rear axle?

The GMC's are also controlled by the steering wheel, I am thinking that you would want the rear independently controlled. I'm wanting to do rear steer on my Toyota but that won't come until I have the cash and many other mods come. So I haven't done it yet, but if you wanted a center differential rear axle that steers I would look into getting an extra front axle cutting the knuckles off of it then mounting them on a rear axle. As far as steering goes the best way would be hydraulic. What kind of axle are you wanting to run.

GMC sold less than 18,000 trucks equipped with quadra steer, it basically tanked.
You could get a Late 80's Prelude with 4 Wheel steering.

The crawler in the 4th or 5th post looks like it is using Rockwell axles.

IN working with 4ws vehicles most are steering wheel controlled. But there is a switch to activate the rear steer, and a switch to activate it and make it crab walk.

GM's quadrasteer may not have been a great success in terms of sales, but it did open up the full size truck market to the idea. I think it is a cool idea, I just wish they had it on the 3/4 tons, and 1 tons.

You could take a front axle turn it upside down and use a transfer case out of a older FJ. I know for sure that the front and rear pumpkins on 60's are both on the passenger side. I don't know how well it would work or if it would work at all but my brother and I have kicked around the idea after drinking beer all night long.....

Well from experience with 4way steer on equipment. ( not cars/trucks)
You will need 2 go with hydro steer and you will need a hydro manifold with valves and coils if you plan on multi steer 2/crab/4

your gona have 2 upgrade you pump. now for the steering box I don't know if the IFS box will be enoff. you might have 2 go 2 a full hydro box found on equipment.


As for axles....... i say tractor axles there thick & heavy but off road only.
I don't know about toy/dana front's on the rear and how that will effect ring/pinon lubercation.

The best way to do this is as stated: Hydro. In fact, its the only way I can think of to do it.

You need all the valves and everything to make it work, again, as stated.

This should cost you around 4k new, less if you find all the stuff used and use really crappy axles. If you build this properly, it will be really cool. If you don't, you will have a good time breaking the rear end apart a lot.

If you wanted to keep it all yota:

Take a SA front and cut the knuckles off. Weld them onto the rear axle with the proper caster angle you want. Then take two long side axle shafts from the front and cut them down and spline to fit the rear. then just fab a steering setup.

If you want to go beefier, cut the knuckles off a D60 and weld onto a toy rear axle. then just repeat the other steps.

I saw a guy the other day that welded knuckles off a rockwell onto a GM 14bolt to accomplish the same in his full size rig. then took the rockwell spiders and welded them into the 14bolt carrier and used rock axles.

I eventually would like rear steer and think i'm going to go with the all toyota method... cuts down on the amount of spare parts you need to carry too!

It would be next to impossible to get a mechanical steering set up to work. You could do it but holy crap. Hydro is a billion times easier, and is much better over all.

As everyone else has stated Hydro is the only logical way but its pretty easy and cheap to do.
The hard part is the rear steer axle, I've seen a few forsale on Pirate but I think an only toyota wouldnt hold up very well
unless you started with a set of 80's, cut the knuckles off the front and put them on the rear, then get Longs but thats $$
If your doing it you might as well use a 60 and resleeve the short side and cut down the long side to length but thats $$ also
