Cool 2nd Gen 4runner Rock Slider Build

Well here I am once again doing yet another project on the runner. This round I've decided on some functional sliders.

Grabbed up some materials from the local steel shop:
1 3/4in x .120 HREW Tubing

Now this was actually my first attempt ever trying to bend tube accurately. My first thoughts were that it wouldn't be too hard but I soon found out that it can be quite tricky. Angles,Measurements,Math equations what the hell!

To start I cut out two 63in tubes and left them straight. After I cut out two 75in pieces to be bent. I intentionally made them longer then I needed to allow for some fudging. I figured if I made two 90s at approx what I wanted I could cut off the ends.

The goal was to have about 2 inches on each side where the outside bar met in the inside. The first 90 was bent on the very end and the next was started at 55in from the inside of the 90. We decided that the bender took up about 8 inches with the bend so 63-8=55. Gave it a shot and BLAMMO it frickin WORKED.

(HELPFUL TIP: When bending your 2nd 90 be sure to make your tube level with with the first and always always always double check before you bend.)

This baby helped so much making the fish mouths on the tubing. We even made a jig with it on the table to cut the bent tubing as well. (forgot to take a picture of how we made it.)

Here was the outside tubes together with fishmouths cut.

To make the inside supports I cut 7in pieces and hole saw cut one side then took a measurement from the inside of the fishmouth and measured out 5 inches, marked it up then holesaw cut the other side. To keep the angles the same I used the weld mark from the HREW pipe as my straight line.

Time to weld em up!

After welding both it was time to start mocking them up. Once I got them where I wanted I started to measure out my feet length and angle to attach them.

Well I went back to the grind.

Picked up some fishplates from my dad's old work.

Took a few mock ups to check distances and measurements over and over again. But once I was satisfied with the placement I welded the fishplates to the frame.

Yikes right? stick welds didn't come out very clean but they penetrated well and will hold just fine.

Made a few gussets

After all the mocking up and measurements I welded it all together.

Then Welded the feet to the frame with the gussets and gots me some sliders!

Decided to use some of my skateboard grip tape to make the tops of the sliders less slick.

Just cut out 4 even strips and lined them up. Eazy peazy, but seems to work very well. I also use this Ebony grip tape on my bikes as well.

Good question! Didn't think much about it but I guess I can lay it out.

1 3/4" X .120 HREW 20ft stick = $46
also picked up a 6-7ft remnant =$14
Welding supplies about = 15$
Paint was free
Fish plates were free
Skateboard grip tape per sheet used 1 @ = $4
Automotive masking tape = $8

sooooo.... $87

I could see this costing anywhere between 100-130$ if you had to buy all the supplies
