2nd gen Sonoran bumper on a 3rd gen?

I have a 95 2nd gen 4runner with a nice Sonoran rear bumper that I want to put on my new '98 4runner. Steve @ Sonoran tells me that it is not possible, I say anything is possible. Any advice would be most appreciated, as I am selling the '95. Thanks...

So you asked the owner of the company if his creation/design/fabrication will fit on the truck he didn't make it for?

And you don't believe him? And you want us to tell you it'll fit?

...

Everything is possible in one way or another, but I think it would be easier to just build a new bumper, you obviously have the knowledge.

I work at a heavy truck modification company and I know I can possibly make it work and am simply asking if anyone has experience regarding this.

Localmotion 01-21-2007 03:32 PM

well take measurements of your 2nd gen and 3rd gen. Take notes of where the brackets are and etc.

Im sure Steve wouldn't lie to you. It might even be a lot more work than its even worth. but hey, give it a try! good luck

Thanks Matt...

Possibility? We are going to argue the merits and limits of possibility? Come on.

You apparently have the skills, go and do it.

You called the guy who made that bumper, and who makes bumpers for the truck you have. He said it won't work and now you come here?

The advice from those who have considered this is get the bumper to match the truck. You can make a pile of poop look like a boob, but when you are done, it is really neither.

Thanks guys, I am not sure what a D9 bumper is but this 4ruuner has an ARB with a winch and I think the Sonoran would be a nice match. Thanks...

if you give us some pics of the mounting system maybe someone can chime in with a little more help. theres really nothing we can say. you know what needs to be done, just mock it up, look at what you need to do to mount it, and fab it up from there. shouldnt be too hard.

The mounting brackets are completely different, vertical on one and horizontal on the other, the wings are a completely different shape and different length.

I think it would be more work to rebuild it than it would be to make a new one for a 3rd Gen.

I will still make a few 3rd Gen bumpers every year. 3 or 4. But I will not make any more 2nd Gen bumpers no matter what. Sell it and make some good money and use that to start over.

Also which one of the 3 people who bought 2nd Gen bumpers are you? One Maryland, One Florida and One Los Angeles.

There are over 50 3rd Gen bumpers I built out there.

lol... this thread is comical... :D

What are you guys talking about? This is great!

Steve, will you please build me a third gen bumper, but ship it to this guy, i'm going to send him out my moutain bike and have him modify the mounts so it will fit. I think my bike could also use some sliders too...perhaps you could ship those with the bumper?

calrockx 01-21-2007 06:35 PM

Shoot, that guy could probably turn that mountain bike into a spaceship. Anything is possible, right?

sschaefer3 01-21-2007 06:44 PM

My guess is that he bought the Maryland 4Runner and now wants something even newer. I don't think this is one of the original 3 buyers, but a 2nd hand owner.

People have seen the Black 2nd Gen from Florida in Sedona, AZ so I don't think it's that one and the truck in LA, he welded it to the frame so I don't think it's that one either.

You want one of the 3-4 3rd Gen bumpers this year. Speak up soon, most of them are taken. I not in the bumper business anymore, not enough profit for the time involved.

chimmike 01-22-2007 06:12 AM

sell me your 2nd gen rear bumper (provide pics) and buy the 3rd gen one lol.

Sonoran Steel

I have now successfully modified a 2nd generation Sonoran Steel rear bumper to fit on my '96 4runner. I extended the frame and cut out slots. I have since trimmed it out. I am now going to paint it with wrinkle black roack guard paint. It was a breeze. I will send photos...

1st Gen 4Runner

Any used bumpers out there, front or rear, for an 88 4Runner? Thanks.

I am trying to downsize the photos I want to attach showing the steps i took to put on this bumper. I changed my avatar photo that shows it. Thanks...

bigt 12-25-2007 07:58 AM

some of use with gen 2s would kill for a nice bumper like that.... most of the time the fabricators pass us by.... gen 1 and gen 3 and 4 get all the goodies
