i figured I'd post some pictures of my latest project. i'm building a custom front bumper mostly out of 2x2 .125wall steel tubing.
My tools are an angle grinder, 10" miter saw with metal blade, and a Ac lincoln are welder.
i'm pretty pleased with my work, what do you guys think

End of second day of building

I'm not done yet, im putting a 2x2 tube hoop in the center, and maybe 1x1 tube hoop around the head lights

I'm thinking of something similar. I thinking of the main bumper made of 2x2 like yours. I'm also thinking of the upper hoops made out of round tubes. Looking good.

Right now the bumper weights about 54 pounds.
Next is to weld on the square trailer hitch receiver.

I am still deciding whether to make headlight hoops. If i made them this is what they would look like. i would use 1x1 square tubing.

The small orange circles are the turn signals, and the yellow circles are my KC daylighters.
What do you guys think headlight hoops or no?

CC_yota 01-13-2008 06:10 PM

Looks good, you should throw a skid plate in there too...

haha funny you should say that Crolison. Through out the building process i have been looking at your bumper build as reference. It would looks even more similar if i had a pipe bender. haha thanks for posting all the pics in your thread

To respond to cc_yota
I am definitely putting some type of skid plate in the middle, I'll probably get a big sheet of aluminum and drill some holes for air flow.

nice build keep up the work

Chrisnxl185 01-15-2008 09:15 AM

what color do you guys think i should paint it?
i'm thinking like a satin black

TC4RNR 01-15-2008 09:53 AM

you know, PINK is the new black.

nice work!

nick_8787 01-15-2008 10:06 AM

Personally I think black is the way to go. I also have a white 2nd gen and a white paint job with black trim looks really good IMO. Don't forgot the pics when it's all painted up and mounted.

Heres my front receiver. I gusseted the crap out of it, so it should be strong enough.

Looks good, I think that the squared off, square tubing look might be a little more at home on a 1st gen 4runner or 2nd gen truck, but still looks good, I would do the headlight hoops in round, but like you said, you don't have a bender :( not having tools sucks

I would paint it black or maybe dark grey, colored stuff like that just looks funny, there is a white 2nd gen running around here that is done up in all lime green: fender flares, flames coming up the hood, bumpers, even the little window vent-visor thingys. Makes me want to :barf: :barf: everytime I see it

The only good thing that I've seen with colored stuff on it is fillsrunner, his is black with a bunch of red stuff on it, like the sliders and some other crap I can't think of right now

TC4RNR 01-15-2008 04:03 PM

how did you mount the bumper to the frame? from the picture i could tell there are only 4 bolts holding the whole thing. 2 on the side on to the frame, 2 on the front cross member. i would weld the lower corss directly on to the end of frame because the stock front crossmember isn't that sturdy at all.

pat24 01-15-2008 04:22 PM

o great now that you finished yours you can come over and help me with mine haha with you skills

Chrisnxl185 01-15-2008 05:09 PM

i really don't want to weld straight to the frame, i like being able to take it off. If i ever sold it i would want to be able to put the stock bumper back on.
But you do raise an interesting point. It seems pretty sturdy to me, it's not a winch bumper so it won't have too much stress on it. How are winch bumpers like ARB, and TJM mounted

What do other people think of my mounting system, strong enough??
