Lower Salt River Clean-up - March 5th

I received this email today from the National Forest Services Volunteers - Mesa District:

PLEASE JOIN US MARCH 5 FOR THE RIVER BANK CLEAN-UP ON THE LOWER SALT RIVER

At this time of year, the Lower Salt River is at a low level and it's a great opportunity to clean-up some of the debris previously floating in the river that has now accumulated on the banks. Please mark your calendar to join us on March 5 from 8 AM to 12 PM to clean-up these areas. We will register at Blue Point Recreation Site from 8-9 AM, and do the clean-up until noon. At noon a free lunch will be provided to all participants.

Please sign-up for this event to let us know you are coming. You can register from the website page for this event, or you can drop us an e-mail at riverbankcleanup@mrdvolunteers.org. The web page also includes a link with a map to the area.

Thanks for helping us with this clean-up. We look forward to seeing you and having a good time together!

This is not a trail clean up - this is a river bank clean up so 4WD vehicle is not required; only common sense equipment is: Gloves, hats, sunscreen, etc...
Please sign up and give back to your national forests! Hope to see you all there!

This is the official press release for the clean up:

For Immediate Release

Volunteers sought for River Bank Clean-up on the Lower Salt River
Mesa, Ariz. (February 12, 2011) – As one of the busiest recreation spots on the Tonto National Forest, the Lower Salt River Recreation Area hosts thousands of visitors year round. Unfortunately, many of these visitors leave their trash behind, and some of it accumulates in the river.
To help restore the river to its natural beauty, and clean up debris that was floating in the river, the Mesa Ranger District, Tonto National Forest, will host a cleanup of the river bank, Saturday, March 5 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“Now, while the river is at a low level is a good opportunity to clean-up the banks and to help enhance and preserve the beauty and outstanding recreational opportunities on the Salt River,” said District Ranger Art Wirtz. “We really need the public’s help to clean up these heavily-used recreation sites.”
Register online for the event at www.mrdvolunteers.org/riverbankcleanup.html, or in person at the Blue Point Recreation Site from 8 to 9 a.m on the morning of the event. The clean-up begins immediately after registration and will continue until about noon when lunch and beverages will be provided free to volunteers.
Trash bags and parking for volunteers are free for the day’s events. Participants are urged to wear closed-toe, rubber-soled shoes that can be worn in rocky terrain, as well as sunscreen, and gloves. A majority of the clean-up will occur in the river bed near the water.
“Having support from the public for this event goes a long way toward restoring the Lower Salt,” Wirtz said. “This is a great opportunity for those who truly love our forest to give back, helping us preserve this great recreation area for the future.”
For more information, go to the event website or e-mail riverbankcleanup@mrdvolunteers.org.

Please join us for a few hours and give back to your national forest.
