1988 Toyota 4Runner blinking 4x4 light
 

so I have a 1988 Toyota 4Runner manual 22re 2.4l sr5 ... I put it in to 4wheel drive today to make sure everything is ok.. something happened that never happened before, the 4x4 light was flickering a bit... my 4x4 worked perfectly fine as far as I could tell.. but just a bit of a flicker I noticed, I shifted into low and high and had the same results.. what could it be and should I be worried? Also I noticed a bit of a ticking noice while in 4wheel drive only coming from the front

Something stuff ive done to the truck... I had to replace the rotors so I had to take apart the hub, I was very careful doing this and pretty confident I put everything back the same.. added some new grease and called it a day. Also had to replace the cv boot and checked the axel and everything again seems fine... trucks driving good, there's just the ticking/clicking noise and the 4x4 light blink... anything helps thanks

You don't say what engine and tranny you have

You still do not say whether auto or manual tranny.

If manual, the light means absolutely nothing, as far as transfer case operation is concerned. I'm not sure about auto tranny/t. case operation.

In the t. case used with manual trannies, a switch on the t. case just makes ground to light the light on the dash. Makes no difference to t. case operation whether it works or not.

so the light flickering really means nothing? I was putting 2 and 2 together because of the ticking noice I heard

Unless the ticking noise is caused by the t. case not going completely into gear, it is likely not related.

The 4x4 light switch is actuated by a detent notch in one of the t. case shifting forks.

how would I know if the t.case is going completely into gear?

I read your first post again, and I would say that if it will go from 4 high over into neutral and then 4 low, it is very likely properly engaged.

There has been no recent violent abuse of the shifters, or changes like a body lift. eh???

no abuse to the shifters.. it's had a 4' body lift sense I got it 6months ago.. It had 33" tires on before I got it, I went down to 31" and now recently put back on 33s

i went offroading ding a couple months ago .. which was pretty abusive you can say, that's why I had to replace the cv boot and an idler arm, sense I put bigger tires on it again I upgraded the steering stabilizer, sense I've replaced everything I haven't done any off-roading , what I'm worried about is the hubs I took apart.. I was very careful in taking everything apart and putting it back together, I can't say it's not in the back of my head that I messed something up... bearings looked good, through some extra grease on them and called it a day
