Scepter gas cans
Anybody know anything about these gas cans? The xterra guys say good things about them like they don't leak. One of them said the wedco metal jerry cans (the good ones) flaked off paint in the gas.

Seen 'em leak.
Not sure if mine is from Wedco or not but it hasn't lost any of the internal coating that I can tell and doesn't leak a drop. The closure on it is a cam lock setup, not a spin on cap. |
i have a wedco design one and like it a lot better than the blitz metal one i have in the garage... and as for paint possibly chipping off, thats what my fuel filter is for on my truck....
|
I have the NATO cans. Just like the Wedco, but not new. The inside is not painted. It has a coating that seems to be part of the surface. Almost like an anodizing.
Re: the cans you mention. I have seen them used before, and seem to be okay. The spout they show will definately slow down the fuel transfer process unless it is vented. That is one of the biggest advantages of the Wedco style cans. Their spout is vented and you can empty a 20L fuel can in less than a minute. With the conventional spout it takes 3-4 minutes. That can be torture. |
I've been using the scepter can for a year or so. I store it on its side on my roof rack. No leaks. No scratches on the roof rack either.
The high-flow spout pours great and doesn't leak either. It's a great can. |

Are the regular red plastic gas cans you can buy at OSH or Home Depot ok? I have one that I used for lawn mower duty-but never on the truck.
I guess the small capacity is a problem... |
A quote from one xterra guy:
I used to swear by Wedco gerry cans, because they were durable and couldn't easily be chafed or worn through. Then one day I was filling one up at the gas station and the sun caught it just right, and when I looked inside, I saw thousands of tiny flecks of paint, as all the paint had come off of the sides, and was floating around in the gas. Now I use Scepters, but I'm more careful about what they rub up against while I'm driving. They work great. |
Well, he's pretty sure the flakes came from the can:
... the flecks were the same color as the can, and there were some larger flakes which were red on one side and metallic on the other. I kept thinking of my fuel injection all clogged up with red paint. |

I love the original NATO cans, but if this one has a spout that does not chug like a sparkelts bottle, I am all for it. Where can they be had cheaply?
|
Well, I only looked at the webpage I linked earlier and one other linked on the xterra board, but the gas ones seem to be about $39 and the water ones seem to be about $20.
I wonder how the plastic will hold up to the sun if I store them outside all the time. |
i get odg wedcos at the local army surplus store near me.. they are $30 there....

I bought used ones (NATO, same as the Wedco copies) from cheaper than dirt for less than $10 each. They appear to be out of them, and now have new ones for $15. Buy the Wedco spout for use with this can. Click the link below. Cheaper Than Dirt |
Those are awesome!
George, I just mounted that fuel thing yesterday and the NATO tank sits in it pretty well. One good sharp tug and it's out :bigok: |
Nice,
How did you mount it? Pics? Also, thanks for turning me on to Cheaper than Dirt! |
No pics at the moment (at work) but I mounted one on the toolbox in the back of my Tacoma. The planned mount in my 1st gen is similar to where Josh (Phalanx) has his.
Also, thanks for turning me on to Cheaper than Dirt! I love the prices on some of the stuff there! |
