Mod: Axe Mounted in the Cargo Area (pics)

Believe it or not we have trees here in AZ :D, especially up in the high country, which is where we do most of our wheeling/camping. An axe is something that I really needed because I frequently come across fallen trees at camp and across the trail - and let's face it, cutting wood with a hatchet just isn't any fun.

To do this mod, you will need to remove both cargo cover pieces from one side. A philips-head screwdriver is all you need. Then, you are going to need to come up with some sort of creative way to use the existing holes to mount brackets, which in turn will secure the small Quick Fist clamps. I actually used some leftover plastic brackets from my Flex-a-lite 210 fan kit. Once you get all that mounted, you are going to need an axe. I went with a True Temper axe from Lowes. It was around $25.

I think it looks pretty cool.

Yes, this is a pretty large open space. Maybe I can have something fabbed that will "plug" it. We'll see.

I hope you like it. I should also note it's easily reversible. :great:

That is such a large axe, it would magnetically attract cops from pulling you over.

You would get in the biggest trouble with one of those in CA...they'd easily step back and pull their gun.

I'll be fine here in AZ. After all, we can legally pack heat in our vehicles. An out-of-reach axe would be the last concern of a skittish officer.

I imagined you'd say that. AZ is real nice in that regard, but then again...you really don't need an axe around the city here so it's understandable. Nice setup either way :)

thats awesome

bballchrism 12-30-2006 05:29 PM

i would like to do that becuase there is always trees and such after a hurricane or a heavy rainstorm on trails and of course thats the best time to go mudding:hillbill:
but my amps and speaker are already in the way:(

How do you like the quick-fist clamps?

I am thinking of using them to mount a shovel and an axe to my roof basket.

I really like them. In fact, I am going to get more so I can mount a shovel somewhere too. I PM'd Wabbit about him becoming a dealer but never heard back from him. Maybe Cabela's is the best place to get them for now. :dunno:

I still think it would be really cool if Jason B, Wabbit, Steve, or one of those guys started stocking them as I can see these things really taking off once people start making posts about them.

So yeah, I like 'em!

I can get 4 for $32 shippped from OK Off-Road, not too bad.

Yeah, Cabela's charges $7.99 for (1) 2-pack, so those two places are about the same. That seems to be the going rate. Shipping wasn't too bad from Cabela's.

Looks good! I am really liking those clamps, I think I am going to have to buy some.

I think you need a husky cargo liner to give it a "finishing touch". :)

BruceTS 01-01-2007 04:21 PM

Now you need to figure out where to mount a chainsaw.....

I usually just drive over the logs or use my winch to pull them out of the way......

rimpainter.com 01-01-2007 04:52 PM

Yeah, a Huskyliner might be a nice finishing touch - in black of course. A chainsaw mount? Hmmm, I bet it could be done! I'll stick with an axe for now though. :)

Nice mod. I've been wanting one for camping trips instead of my currently abused hatchet. Picked up two sets of Quick Fists awhile back. Got one set for my home made shovel mount and another set awaiting something like you got. THanks for sharing.

Looks good dude. Very ingenious. :bigclap:

And there's something very Patriotic about the 1st photo with a nice red axe mounted in the cargo area with an American Flag draped on the wall in the background! YEAH!!!

Looks good man, I might look into some of those quick fist clamps, I want to mount an aze and a shovel in the bed of my truck.

rimpainter.com 01-02-2007 03:47 PM

Thanks guys! Now do me a favor and start PM'ing Brian (Wab Fab) and ask him to carry Quick Fist clamps!
