Locker Question
 

Ive been thinking about buying a locker for my 86 Toyota 4x4 and I think Im gonna go with ARB. Im gonna do one for now and my question is would it be better to lock up the front or rear for now?

ide go rear...just cuz you can do more stuff n 2wd locked then :D but the better part of me would say the front would be better cuz its going to be off the ground more and has more weight up there, just preference i guess, i dunno any 1 that just has their front locked tho..

I put a Detroit in my rear axle 9 years ago and it's worth it's weight in gold. Used it to pull a 3/4 ton GMC out of the snow after his front locker grenaded the ears on his stub shaft. I would go with the front. Especially if the truck is still IFS.

Correction, The rear. I would go with the rear.

umm--not to be devisive, but; think about if you only had one set of iron to throw on--would you put it on the front or rear? maybe it would depend on the terrain but since you are talking about lockers i assume you are talking off-road--you would probably find that being 'pulled' by your front-end would serve you better than being 'pushed' by the rear in knarly situations--

That was totally my outlook at putting a locker in the front, but as said earlier it would be nice to have it in the rear for minor situations. My buddy has a 2000 Taco with a stock rear locker and he can go a good distance before putting it in 4.

If its ifs still dont waste your money up front. Put it out back.

no doubt, lockers are magical if you know when and where to use them--you could always experiment, i mean it's abit of extra work and if you're like me you would rather play than wrench--but i would like to see the two situations side by side and see what happens--only off-road mind you, there's a reason a factory puts a single locker on the rear--it's called "liability"--

i dont imagine it would handle very well if you locked the front with out the rear, and have fun breaking birfields if you lock the front

Im pretty sure im gonna throw one in the back, not to mention its going in a bone stock toyota aside from the 31's. One thing I thought about to is that when I flex out, its always the rear to go first, leaving me with a free spinning wheel and im dead not gonna do anything wheel. The locker would be nice in the back for that reason, sure I could throw it in the front and pull through, but one thing that crossed my mind is my Toyota is kind of a turd, it lugs bad enough in 4x4. Not to mention as said earlier..liabilty, if my front end went and I just had one tire fire in the middle of a trail, that would be sad face 5000. Down the road I will buy a locker for the front and use it as a last resort.

IFS doesn't have birfs either, we have CV's.

Im pretty sure you cant even buy marfields anymore..... Even if you found a set they are nothing compared to longs....

so all you guys are saying that the locker is good in the rear overall 2wd and 4wd in any situation?

Yes, unless you have lots of ice in the winter.
