Lifting, Bigger Tires, Locker? - 1986 2WD Pickup
I own a 1986 Toyota Pickup. It's 2WD, 5spd, with about 90k miles. I believe it has an 8 inch rear end. I can't remember how you determine whether its 7.5 or 8.
Anyway, I'm interested in turning it into a semi off road vehicle. Yet still remain a daily driver.
I has all stock suspension. I need to know what is the largest size tire I can go with my stock gears, and still be able to take it on the freeway each morning. I also need to know what is the largest size tire I can put on my current wheels. (I would really not like to buy new wheels if I can help it.) I don't have all the exact measurements of my wheels, but I believe their 15" in diameter. (Below are pics.) Also, should I look into a locker being that my truck is 2WD? I need one that I can turn on when I hit the trails, and turn off when I hit the city. Finally, what sort of lift should I purchase? I'm really clueless.
Thanks for any help, comments, or suggestions! (Below are pictures.)

i think you have a 7.5" rear end, so selectable lockers would be limited to an ARB i think. maybe jim will chime in here, he seems to know about messing with the 2wd suspension

Back in 1986, I had a 1980 Datsun/Nissan 2WD truck. The best thing to do is put a nice 3" Body lift and run 31's. In fact there was a company doing just that to brand new 2WD Toyota's here in AZ right around 86-87.
Get a set of gears from the front diff on an IFS truck (86-95, 4WD) and a locker that fits that diff, the ARB RD90 or maybe even a Tru-Trac and you'll be set.
Use the mathematical formual to find out what gears will work the best with 31's and you'll be set.
Also Downey has a lot of stuff for that exact truck.

whoa... up, down, up, down, up, down... do you change your suspension setup every 6 months! ..
locker options will depend on what rear end you have, i dont know if there are any selectable lockers for the 4x2.... if it looks like this:
it is a 7.5"
if it looks like:
its an 8"
lockers are streetable, you jsut cant drive liek a moron.... i have stock 3.07 gears in my 4x2, and routinely go on the highway.. i am also running 31" tall tires.... my truck is a daily driver and lifted... my truck is a little bit taller now
BEFORE you buy anything, confirm it has a 7.5" or 8" rear end... supposedly, the 4x2s didn't come with the 8" rear end, but my vin plate says it has a 3.07 gear ratio and an 8" rear end and that my truck is a 4x2 rn50..... and i do have an 8" rear end

So if you have 3.07 gears and 27" tires stock, then actually 3.52 would be the correction for 31's. A set of front 4.10's from a T-bar front IFS diff would fit the bill perfect.
Actually with the 4.10's you could roll 33's and with a rear locker, you would be set.
No low range though.

I found a 3.5" inch suspension from Fabtech off of 4wheelonline.com, i haven't installed it yet, but I'm hoping to fit some 31 10.50's on it. You could also combine this with a 3" body to comfortably fit 33's on it... btw, my truck looks almost exactly like yours besides the chrome and i have the same questions lol hopefully they will be answered soon, i'll let ya know

Ball joit spacers can give you a couple inches of front lift:

Longer spring shackles or add-a-leaf spring in back can level the truck out:

Body lift can raise everything up:

31x10.5's are great if you also put in a body lift. Along with the add a leaf's in back and BJ spacers and torsions up front. lift spindles are in my trucks future-already sourced.
I REALLY wish there was a true lift kit for us 2wd guys, but our trucks are too damn old.
