IFS taco diff
i know that 96-02 4Runners have the same gears and housing as the 96-04 Tacomas, but are the diffs interchangable or do the Taco diffs have a different spline count than 4Runners?
basically, can a taco diff be put into a 4Runner without swapping axles and hubs? |
i dont know, but why do you want a taco diff for?

Originally posted by Albuquerque Jim I think they are interchangeable. Check out parts.com and compare part numbers. |
its all the same, as long as you have ADD and it have ADD.. also if you have v6 and it came from a V6 it should be the same. CV joins are all the same, only difference is on the hib site of a CV.. other then that, get it :)

the diff already has a locker in it? what kind of locker is it? if you're only running a front locker be prepared to replace cv's left and right :hillbill:

If it were auto, i'd get manual hubs. I had a friend with a Taco with only a front locker and manual hubs. He broke cv's all the time. Seeing the 4runner is heavier, it might turn you into a pro 15 minute cv changer ;)

there are some guys in my TTORA chapter who have the Lockright with ADD. they love it! we'll see how it goes...
im more concerned about steering than stress on CVs. |
Those guys running front and rear lockers or just front?
|
Do you already have 4.88's in the rear diff? For some reason, I don't think everything is the same for the 4runner and Tacoma front diffs, possible outer cv's are different? I'm thinking along the lines of the ORS kit and what needs to be changed to put on manual hubs, I realize its a somewhat unrelated topic.... Steve would be the one to chime in on this one.

So you're going to regear the rear diff at the same time when you install the front?

See my other post regarding the ADD actuators. Depending on the year of the Taco that is the donor, you may be getting vacuum actuated ADD or electric actuated ADD. Chances are that the ADD on your 4runner is the vacuum type ('98-'00)
