I have a hill in my backyard that I can't seem to get up

It rises about 100 feet in about 200 feet so I think it is about a 45* angle. It is just dirt and gravel. I tried to climb it before the locker and it was a no go. I weighed it down with a bunch of tree trunks and aired down the tires and still no go. I have lockers now and it still won't climb. I haven't tried weighing it down or airing down the tires yet. I'd rather just be able to climb w/o putting a bunch of junk in the bed. Maybe I need a different or wider tire? The current tires have near new tread depth. Any suggestions?

need more skinny pedal....:hillbill:

I think the stock 3.4 makes plenty of hp for such a little truck. I don't want to slide sideways too much and there isn't much if any room for a running start. There are a lot of trees on the property. I have already cut down too many trying to make a path up to the top of the hill.

I want to see some pics of this hill if you can't get up with a 3.4 and lockers.

you want me to come over and push?

drguitarum2005 12-24-2006 08:49 AM

it goes without saying that youre in 4lo? if you crawl slowly, do you just slip right down? what do you air down to?

mt_goat 12-24-2006 08:52 AM

So you're locked F&R and all 4 tires are spinning? What tires? Yeah be very careful using momentum to get up a hill. If you don't have the traction to get up (locked F&R) you also don't have the traction to stop going down.

could be the tires.. 30x9.5 just might not be enough.

and X2 for pics of the hill!

where there is a hill theres a way.... One redneck way is to just hit it faster....lol We do live in TN

It really doesn't look like it is that steep from a picture. Yes, all four wheels are spinning. I can make it about 1/2 way up gunning it. The tires are in the sig goodyear mtr about 31x9. They get caked up with mud/dirt pretty easily. Maybe I need a real mud tire instead of an aggresive all terrain style.

As far as getitng back down I was worried about that. So far all I have been doing is backing down. IF/when I make it to the top is that easier or safer than driving forward. I figured at least backing down if it slides a bunch I won't bash the front end into a tree and have to buy a radiator.

x3 on the pics.

I love a good hill climb!

Stand on it & keep your line straight.

Let's see, to start, if you live anywhere but the southwest, MTR's bring the suck. Lose them. Larger, more aggressive tires will help and wider tires would grab more. Run it at a high RPM, 4 lo 2nd might do the trick, try feathering the pedal a bit so that you don't just spin out right away.

Are you locked both front and rear? Limited slip or real lockers?

Tofer 12-24-2006 12:01 PM

you shouldnt be hving any problems.... another vote for 4lo 2nd gear enough skinny peddle to keep it int he 3k range. what gears are you running?

neilan 12-24-2006 12:50 PM

ya i dunno but i have seen alot bigger hils thta i could make in a 87 runner with a 2.4 no lockers and bfg all terrains. But ya if you tires a not cleaning you not more spin. Id also vote for 2nd gear in 4low.

Elton 12-24-2006 01:35 PM

i could make that just get a run at it

I pull the emergency brake just a little to get my true trac to lock up.
Have you varified that all wheels will spin? I put my mirrors so I can see rears and just look out for left front, you'd have to get a buddy to see right side.
Walk up the hill and jab around to see where the gravel is loose and where the hard pack is. I'll kinda plan my run in my mind, ie stay to left til this tree then work right etc. And you gotta get weight on to the rear wheels good luck :)
