Differental Breather Help Needed

On the differental breather involving the nissan breather stem can you tighten the clamp used to make the hose stay on to tight and should it be close to the bottom of the breather or in the middle??? And where is the front differental cap that keeps stuff out of it located?? a picture would be helpful. i have an 88 4runner. thanks please reply steven

If you are using a hose clamp it would be difficult to tighten it too much to hurt the nipple, but you could start to cut into the hose. It should be tight enough that you can't pull the hose off. As far as the location of the clamp, there is a barb at the end of the nipple. The complete body of the clamp should be below that barb. This is what locks the hose onto the nipple so that it can't come off. Not sure about the front diff on the 1st Gens.

I have an 88 4Runner as well.

Anyone have a link to where this Nissan breather is sold? Or is it something that I could order at a Nissan dealer?

yeah, go to your local nissan dealer and give them this part number 38323-C6010 . you will need two of them. i got mine for $4.50 a piece. i got 20 feet of 7/32" hose from advanced auto it is vaccuum hose. and i got 2 small clamps the hose and clamps ran me alittle overr $15. hope this helps. if you need help pm me. steven

you dont need the nissan part, and fwiw toyota has a similar part as well that ive used on two friends trucks now, a late model 4cyl taco and a tundra.

if you cant find the threaded union, just work the silver cap off with the needlenose, and wet the diameter of the stock breather opening with spit, hairspray, cyano, whatever...as long as it will dry and stick, and dont get it on the opening. just use a slightly larger hose...i think mine's 1/4" fuel line from home despot, it fits fine and isn't cracked or anything. dont forget the hose clamp...crank down as close to flush with the diff as possible if you go this route.

look for a silver nipple somewhere on the pumpkin, it'll be on the top and slightly to one side...all toyotas have one on the diff, and they are all the same (or so said the guy at the dealership--the threads and the breather cap are all the same anyhow) unless it's extended from the factory like the late model front diff and tcases in which case the breathers are in the engine compartment.

Toyota part number with a barbed shaft vent is 90930-03136 this is about 4.5 cm long the breather cap is silver and the body is black abs plastic. the body part were the tube slips on is about 8 mm. suggested toyota retail is $3.32. keep that nissan sutff away!

There is a barb with the correct thread pitch on the intake manifold of several toyota efi engines, including the 5m,and 7m series. It is at least 1.5 inches longer than the stock breather fitting. Just grab a few next time you are at the junkyard. I can't get you a decent pic of the front breather without some sort of mini spy cam, but it's on top of your front diff, samrebasic setup as rear. Hope this helps

i used brass standard 1/8" fittings, the steel housing on the diffs cut the metric into the brass threads. The barbs were 1/4" so i got goodyear 1/4" vaccum hose. On the other end of the hose i used the stock breather attached with a hose clamp.

This is probably the best option. The Nissan part will work if you trim it and use a strong zip tie rather than a hose clamp. The V6 motor oil pan hangs lower than the 4 cylinder motor. This Toyota part is shorter and will fit in there, plus its cheaper. It dosen't hurt to ask for the TLCA discount even if you aren't a member. You might get 10%-20% off depending on the counter guy's mood. ;)
