03/04 4Runner skid plates

I have not found a good replacement for the stock sheet metal skid plates.

I'm thinking of making a replacement and a transfer case skid plate.

Also I would like to be able to change the V8 oil filter without removing the skid plate.

I can laser cut and bend one up, but making a batch of 10 would not be much more work than making the first one.

Has anyone found one or should I make up a batch.

You might want to read through this thread for ideas and a reality check on the amount of work involved in making a production run. It's very doable but it sure stressed those guys out like there was no tomorrow.

Ahhhhhhhh, the drama of it all, I remember it like it was yesterday.

Find yourself a decent sheet metal fabricator and they should be able to help you design and build it. Expect to pay somewhere between $5-600 bucks for a one off, one time deal.

Hey Mike, are you still thinking of making a transfer case skid?
If you are how close are you? I'm still thinking of picking up the one from skidplates.com made for the taco. Just wanted to know if you had something in mind first.

At one time, AZRain and I got together to measure things on my 4th Gen. But after reading his continuous problems with scheduling, work, demands, work, family, and work on the 3rd Gens, I figured that he would have had enough of the skid plate fabrication job. To this day, I haven't found, or heard, of anyone making a skid plate for our Runners.

Personally, I'm just gonna keep beating the dents out of mine until it falls apart. Currently, it looks like one of those Jamaican metal drums...

Steve, holy crap, I've been racking my brain trying to remember your user name here. Well, news around here is twofold;

More new designs, nah, busier than a bulemic at a pie eating contest right now, but I'll still do a one off here and there. I have a crap load of skid blanks just sitting in my garage for 3rd Gens and I need to do something with them.

Two, the really unfortunate part is biting the bullet to design and eat the prototype cost and have a hundred peeps yell out that they want them and then they get bored with a "shiny new toy" or just plain didn't have any intentions to begin with but to spew drivel on a BBS (which btw is hella fun!)

Anyhow, catch me offline. Later.

He was looking for 4th gen. skid plates. I thought the TC ones were for 3rd only.

I'm just about to laser cut a skid plate for my 03 4Runner, including the transfer case and the gas tank.

Do you think anyone would be interested after they see the first one.

I work for a fabracation shop and this kind of stuff is just a matter of eating the time to do the first one.

Oh, I'm going to figure out a way to allow access to the oil filter on V8's

Larry:

I'm definitely interested since mine looks like swiss cheese now ;)

Larry 01-03-2004 11:53 PM

Good Times,

Is anyone bashing the gas tank on 03/04 4Runners?

Good Times 01-04-2004 10:28 AM

Larry:

My front skid plates (both parts) has dents and quarter size holes now.

The diff is actually unscathed (surprisingly).

The gas tank as dents that are about 6"-12" long...

I guess I'm abit hard on my 4runner ;)

If you're able to make some skids for all the parts, I'd be pretty darn interested btw :)

Next week I go back to work and plan to get to work on them.

From what you are saying the priority is, front tow, gas tank and last the transfer case.

I have some stuff facing me at work to get done first but I want to get started on this stuff next.

With laser cutting and bending it up in a big ass break it should come out looking good.
