Gas Mileage For My Tundra
 

I have a 2001 Tundra v-8. I am gettin 14 miles to the gallon. I love my truck but the gas i killin me. I heard other people get 17 to 18 in there tundra's. Is there anyone else that gets terrible gas mileage too. Is there anything i can do about it??????? HElllpppppp!!!:bounce: :help:

I had the same prob with mine (02' tundra trd) now I get @ 16mpg. I put fuel injector cleaner in every two tanks and put a K&N stock filter in, Dont know if that helped any but it didnt hurt.

I have an '03 Access Cab V8 4X4. Not to rub it in, but I have gotten as much as 20 MPG (mostly highway miles) and average between 17 and 19 with mixed traffic. During the winter with a snowy week and in 4H most of the time I got 15 MPG. (DC metro traffic isn't pretty.) My mileage has become more consistent with the use of a K&N stock filter (33-2144) and using AMSOIL Series 2000 0W30 Synthetic oil with their oil filter (SDF 57). I have shied away from AMSOIL's oiled foam air filters because they bled too much filter oil into the intake manifold on past vehicles.

One possibility is that Toyota changed the programming of the engine computer since the 2001 models that has allowed for slightly better mileage. A good Toyota tech could confirm this for you. This was true of the Jeep Cherokee I used to own. :D

I've had my '01 Tundra AC 4X4 for about 5 months now. 20 miles to work each way, 5 days a week through DC metro traffic nets me about 15.5 mpg. Seems to be going up a bit with the warmer weather however. Last night I put 20.6 gallons in with 342.6 "around town" miles showing on the tripometer (16.6 mpg). The few times I've had time to take it outside the city I've gotten as much as 18 mpg @ 75 mph. All stock except the audio and synthetic oil in the engine. This is similar to the numbers I was getting out of my '97 3.4L Taco with 5in lift and 33X12.5's. Go figure...

My 04 AC Sr5 4X4 got 13.5 avg in town 17-18 hwy

I have an 04 V8 AC 4WD and it is practically empty save for me and my 56 mile round trip commute every day and I average a little better than 16 mpg as some mornings the traffic is quite heavy going into Boston. I did a tune up/oil change/plugs/air filter/diff's/greased driveline and on a trip to Conn and back got 17.3-17.6 mpg. As others had observed on this site, it seems the faster we go in the V8 Thundra's, like 75-80 mph, the better the gas mileage. My mileage went up around 1 mpg just from changing out the stock air filter for a new stock air filter.

Things to help get better gas mileage w/o spending a lot of $$$:
1) Go easy on the throttle (but what fun is that)
2) Don't keep unnecessary items in the cab or bed.
3) Have a clean air filter
4) Keep the tires properly inflated. The 26psi that the manual recommends is too soft.
5) Clean the throttle body spacer. I cleaned mine and was amazed how much black crud was in there.

Things like headers & cat-backs, may also help your mileage, but it will take forever to break even. K&N, TRD, Amsoil filters will help mileage a little, but they also let a little more dirt,silica, etc into the engine.

Also, depending where you live may make a difference. I know here in Cali, there is so many stupid additives in the gas, it makes the mileage go down.
I do mostly city driving so I'm lucky is I get 14mpg. D@mn LA traffic.
