2005 Tundra 4WD - cost to replace pads and rotors?

I've never attempted to do a brake pad replacement, but I've gotten to the point with working on my 4runner where I can probably get through the process. My stepdad has a 2005 Tundra 4WD and he says he needs to replace his front pads and (I'm thinking) turn his rotors. He was asking me if I'd like to try doing it myself, and whether he'd save a substantial cost over taking it to a shop.

I was planning to get a Tundra Haynes manual first, but would someone like to give me the nickel tour of the job and estimate what parts would cost? Recommendations on pad brands and anything else I need to buy would be appreciated as well.

I'm kind of debating whether to go through with this job, since brakes are sort of important, y'know? My dad (not my stepdad) has done brake jobs multiple times, but he lives several states away. Is this the sort of thing I should wait and get him to show me in person before I do it on my own, or is it fairly intuitive once you're working on it (i.e., how easy is it to screw up?)

Edited to add: I don't yet own a torque wrench (and won't be able to buy one for this job), so if that's required (or if another expensive tool is), please mention it.
