Manual Trans
When was the last year a Land Cruiser came with a Manual Transmission in the US?
|
The FJ-60 was the last model to have a manual transmission, and it was a 4-speed. They were brought here to the US from 81-87.
(But you want a FJZ80 instead :-) ) |
And the 5spd conversion for the 88-90's is fairly straight forward...
|
So is the 4spd or 5spd conversion on the 80 series on 91-92 :)
|
Umm... it's probably good to note that "straight forward" should be defined in this usage as "Possible for the person who's done vehicle customization/modification before." There are myriad possible problems with this swap and while it is "straight forward", it's certainly non-trivial.

"So is the 4spd or 5spd conversion on the 80 series on 91-92"
Pskhaat, that would stand to reason since they share the engine and transmission. Never seen one though, have you? "Umm... it's probably good to note that 'straight forward' should be defined in this usage as 'Possible' for the person who's done vehicle customization/modification before." bdeakin, I hope anyone trying to do something like this would understand they should research such a thing exhaustively first. In addition, the most important knowledge of ones mechanical ability is to know ones limits. I agree with your statement "but you want an FZJ80 instead". I hope to get one in a few years to complement my UZJ100:) The FZJ80 is an awesome machine, perhaps the perfect Cruiser. |
I havn't seen one myself...yet. I plan on doing an H55 or H42 into an FJ80 possibly. That said, I /do/ have a 3F-E in my FJ40 against the original H42. What makes this possible even further is that the A442F in the FJ80 does not touch the 3F-E's computer, so you don't have to trick it.
As far as an FJZ80 as a perfect Cruiser, for a crawl rig I'm still pro-FJ80. No one believes me, but I swear that 3F-E is a better trail engine. My FZJ80 and my brother's FJ80 are outfitted almost in sync with lift, tires and the like. However, my brother's FJ80 simply can do things mine can't. Makes me a little annoyed but I contribute this to a better (flatter?) torque curve and possibly lighter? You can add PTO more easily to an FJ80, a manual tranny; the automatic is considered more `beefy.' Because you already have a 100, I'd guess the 80 would be more for offroading, so you may want to consider an FJ80 resurrection. |
I almost had a 91 that wasn't running with 250,000 mi. I was number 2 in line for $1500. I didn't even have anywhere to keep at my house but I had worked something out with a friend.
The 91 would have eventually gotten a motor swap and manual transmission:) I plan on 33's, sliders, front winch bumper, and custom rear bumper. I'll do modest trails with this rig. I had to let the Taco go for a family friendly wheeler. Eventually, I'd like to get another Taco, this time with 4 doors, and build a rock rig out of it. I can see where there are benifits to having the 3F-E, but the driveability of the FZJ80's is tempting. |
Has anyone moved forward with a manual swap as discussed since this thread was started. I am considering a manual swap for my fj80 when I rebuild the engine in the near future (I hope).

it is such a crying shame that japanese companies are so reluctant to deliver, to the u.s., the myriad of technologies and equipment options that have been proven to be favorable and desirable to customers in the foreign markets.
I just got back from the republic of georgia, over there i had a '99 cruiser with a 5spd, real 4wd, no fulltime awd. i miss that truck soooooooo much. used it as an ambulance during the war for south ossetia. it's the basic jeep/truck used by the georgian military, and i want another. the first car i had, the one i learned to drive in was an 84 cruiser w/ a 4spd. it stands to reason that i should still be able to buy a comparable late model, but i can't. if i knew exactly who was responsible, i would seriously consider cutting their balls off for not giving the u.s. market the 5spd package without all the heavy electric power nonsense many of us don't want or need. personally, i just want an fj90 or fj100 with a 5spd, real 4wd, manual seats, windows, and mirrors. it ain't alot to ask for, toyota. you dropped the ball and you continue to drop more balls than a one armed juggler. what are you thinking of? btw, why is this truck not at my local dealership in texas? does my u.s. passport somehow make me incapable of spending money on high quality utilitarian gear? http://photos.tradeholding.com/attac...zj79_front.jpg i understand toyota is not the only culprit. go to south america, and good luck finding a gas-powered f150, they're all diesels....which are better motors....imho... anyway, auto to manual swap sucks. did one on a civic, if i do one on a cruiser, i will take many pictures, do a detailed write-up, etc. that would be a while down the road, but i would be super glad to help anyone in the dfw area if they are serious about doing a swap. definitely can be done, just have to have ALL of the necessary hardware and the will power. I know at least a half dozen teenagers that swapped auto to manual in their hondas, ie, you don't have to be an expert. check this link to see what's involved w/ a honda...http://hondaswap.com/swap-articles/a...version-27054/ all of the requisite parts can be ordered from overseas, i just don't know the names of all of the parts, much less the part numbers. the tranny in mine in georgia felt a whole lot tighter than the 4speed in my 84, so that's something to think about too, also hydraulic vs cable, etc. i'll try to get my hands on a physical copies of foreign market parts books for the different years, but unless someone gets serious and wants my help, that's as far as i'll go at this time. i'm surprised there isn't more info on yotatech. after thinking about it, writing this, something tells me there's gonna be a new fj90 in my future.....might just buy one in mexico. probably easier. might find one with a diesel down there, too. god bless. |

i just don't get the ridiculous emissions thing....
where does all the electricity come from? a hell of a lot of it from coal. my job, now, is running flyash from power plants. pays real well, so i'm not complaining about the coal, i'm just saying. seems like there is a market, to me, though. they have the money to build 15 kinds of lexus' with some really complex technologies. most models will never push as many units as a real deal holifield hilux or other ultra-utilitarian truck/suv. i always have believed in simpler technologies. a lot of people DO feel the same way, guess it doesn't matter, really. i'm sure toyota has good reasons and motives that are well beyond my limited understanding. still, it really seems like toyota dropped the ball to my frugal and demanding sensibilities. then again, grass is always greener. i'd prolly still want to mix and match and fabricate to suit my own needs. seriously considering doing a manual swap on a cruiser next spring or summer, if i can't find one in old mexico. if anybody out there's done one, i'd love to hear about how it went. |
