Toyota 9.5" Land Cruiser Semi Float Nitro Xtreme Aluminum Diff Cover-5ghoyqe.jpg

Nitro Aluminum differential covers are extremely thick and have been thoroughly tested in Moab, King of Hammers, and numerous other locations, proving they will handle the rocks, roots, stumps, and anything else you can throw at them. Finned aluminum dissipates heat faster than steel reducing the operating temperature inside your differential and extending the life of your components. Recessed bolts completely eliminate the potential for bolt sheering when crawling over rough terrain. Aluminum can't rust and a Nitro aluminum differential cover will keep your undercarriage looking great all year round. Our wide selection of available covers makes it possible to equip both the front and rear differentials with Nitro covers on many vehicles.

Fits Land cruiser 9.5" Semi-Float axles only, not Full-Float. Also has the same bolt pattern as 1955-1962 Chevrolet Truck with Drop-Out, C-clip Axles and rear cover.

Most oils today are 'Multigrade' oils, which means that the oil is defined by 2 viscosity grades (i.e. 10w-40, 5w-30, etc). Multigrades were developed more than 50 years ago to avoid the requirement of using thick oil in summer and thin oil in winter. The W stands for winter, not weight, which means that the oil has a certain viscosity/flow at low temperature. A lower 'W' number means the oil performs better in cold temperatures. The non 'W' number indicates the oil viscosity level at 100°C (212°F).This is a fixed limit, all oils that end in the same number (30) must meet the limits.

We recommend using 85w-140 in differentials. Whether you are changing out a differential cover, or just replacing the fluid, it's important to use the right oil in your diffs.

What's normal operating temperature for differentials?

Here's a pic taken in a toterhome RV (Freightliner chassis) of the factory differential temp gauges. Pretty cool that semi trucks monitor those temps as standard equipment.

When this was taken the outside temps were in the 60's and the loads were fairly low on the axles. You can even see that with the rear most axle not engaged it was running a bit cooler than the drive axle. Still 160* F or so was the average and would not be an abnormal temp in a car or 4x4 after running down the highway for a couple hours straight.

This is why changing the gear oil regularly makes such a difference in the life span of your axle parts. The oil does break down from the heat and changing it frequently is absolutely the best insurance against premature wear and breakage.
