Starting a 1jz swap and need general advice
 

I'm in the process of swapping a 1jzgte into an 81 short bed. My goal is to keep it entirely toyota by the end of it. I want to keep it with a manual transmission but I am unsure if the stock 4 speed will be up to snuff in terms of gearing or strength. I have been told to use an R154 but I do not have that kind of money currently. The motor comes as a set with an automatic out of a toyota soarer. I'm open to most if not all suggestions.
