Engine performance

Any recommended upgrades for a stock 22RE motor to get a little extra power? I have a 93 2WD lifted, 235/75/15 tires with camper shell and sleeping platform, and camping gear and the extra weight - id estimate 150-200 pounds - has really caused the truck to struggle.

Are there any simple upgrades I can do to add a little extra horsepower, or maybe some efficiency upgrades to optimize what I have?

I was thinking of adding the LCE headers and a cold air intake, which should add 10-15hp from what I read on 4crawlers write up, but wondered if there was anything else I can do. Maybe replacing hoses, fuel delivery components, MAF supra upgrade, etc? Dont have a really any engine and performance knowledge so any suggestions you have would be a good starting point.

Surprised you didn't get any any replies before this, though it's true the topic has been raised a good number of times about our little 22re's. Especially the old tired ones that are suddenly pulling more weight.

I rebuilt my 22re this past summer and it pulls my 85 4runner around much better than it ever did before. I know my 4runner weighs at least a few hundred pounds more than your truck, even with your mods so my info should be relevant. I kept it all stock, no performance upgrades anywhere. My problems were low uneven compression, cam went flat, clutch wore unevenly and the timing chain tensioner broke so my timing was jumping around a little and broke the guides.

I wouldn't have found most of these power-sapping issues had I not done a full tear-down.

How many miles you got on it? Are there any weird sounds at idle or acceleration? What are your compression numbers and are you having any timing-related troubles?

X2 on GSP's advice before doing performance mods. Once it's freshened up or in process throw some mods at it like cam and header.

Watch oil you use our our engines like oil with higher zinc content and only a few, 2 that I know of have it. Zinc is needed to reduce wear on cam lobes. Just a FWIW
