Automatic to 5 speed

I've been looking around the web but all my searches come up with nothing.

I really want to convert my '93 22re pickup (4 cyl) to a 5 speed. A buddy of mine at work told me if I could find a tranny that fit the clutch kit would only cost around 350 dollars.

But I'm stuck on finding anything. Does anyone have any experience with this? Or any idea on where I could get the clutch kit, tranny..etc?

Thanks in advance

look on craigslist for a tranny, and check with wrecking yards, for clutch kits will cost about 100-300 depending on what u want to spend, but u will need to get flywheel, pedal set up, rear driveshaft, boot set up for inside the cab, i did the swap about a yr ago now and i like having a 5 speed, it cost me about 400 for my swap but i know other people have spent in the range of 800.

Ok thanks!

Did it cost you 400 for everything? I want it to be a nice one but I'm on a tight budget

The best and easiest way is to buy a complete 5 speed truck/4Runner with all the parts. Have it sit besides your project vehicle or just outside.

Other wise you will make a zillion trips for the little things you need. The major things are pretty straight forward.

It is the little things forget to jumper the neutral safety switch and it drives you nuts trying to figure why it won`t start.

Get the trans/case up in position only to find out you didn`t cut the floor back far enough.

interesting things like that.

If your on a budget I would say buy what you want sell what you have ..

There are those of us that think doing a swap like this is just time consuming and not a mechanical challenge .

It is a lot of work to do it proper and be unable to tell from a factory 5 speed vehicle.

Good luck no matter how it works out

it was 400 for everything, i found someone parting out the cab of a 4runner and got pedals, master, piping (hard and soft), slave for 40, clutch kit and flywheel from autozone for 140. and trans for 150 from a guy off craigslist, another 20 for grade 8 bolts for the flywheel since the ones for the auto are too short, and another 50 for the longer drive shaft but im hearing that a company makes a spacer now for it too. just keep your eyes open and have a list wrote out of all the parts u need then when u are getting them u sill make sure u have everything and will not have to make 101 trips. some items i can think of off the top of my head u will need are,

trans, flywheel, clutch, flywheel grade 8 bolts, pressure plate bolts, 5speed drive shaft, 5 speed trans mount, not sure on the 4 cly but cross beams where same on the v6 4runner. little wire to jump p/n switch, and if u want to make the 4wd work like normal then u will have a little fun playing with those wire too. reverse wire if u want them to work, and the plugs that plug into on the trans, some people swap the ecu, but i didn't and it runs just fine, u will also need to pull the bulb on the o/d on the dash or it will blink. speed sensor, it u are cable make sure u find a cable one for it, if u are electric look for one of those ones, if u do find a trans u like and it is not the one u like u can get it and just change that part out later, but depending on what one u are looking for it might be a little hard,

well good luck and hope u find it all... let us know if u need more help....

And how do you get the shift levers into the cab?

DCorvin Jan 20, 2012 08:26 PM

OK, so my list is
Transmission, Flywheel, clutch, flywheel grade 8 bolts, pressure plate and 5 speed drive shaft

Right?

Thanks for all the help so far, I'm trying to get all my crap together so when I get my tax money back I can just get it all done!

justin_4runner Jan 20, 2012 09:00 PM

when u pull the auto shifting out it will make room for most, but u will need to cut a little to open it for the rear shifter, i took them out and cut the floor after i got the trans in place and eyed where they go. and then installed them and tried until i got it cut right

yeah list sounds good so far, when u go to do ur 4wd wiring go to this link... https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...s-swap-232732/ its when i did mine and mine works like it should,

DCorvin Jan 21, 2012 10:23 AM

Well my truck is only a 2wd, does this change anything?

justin_4runner Jan 21, 2012 10:30 AM

well then u dont need to worry about the 4wd part. just the wiring for the p/n switch and reverse, see if u know someone with a 2wd 5 speed and measure there drive line, and see if u really do need to get a 5 speed one or not, i know for the 4wd u do but not sure on the 2wd. as for the tunnel area im not sure if the 2wd just has a plate there or not, ur shifter is up on the dash or on the floor?

DCorvin Jan 21, 2012 10:32 AM

My auto trans is up on the column

justin_4runner Jan 21, 2012 10:40 AM

ok you will have to pull carpet back and see if there is a plate down where the shifter goes.if not there then u will have to cut a hole for the shifter to come up threw the floor pan. might have to pull the shifter on the column so it doesn't look weird after u change it all over.

DCorvin Jan 21, 2012 10:56 AM

Yeah i was thinking about that last night haha! It would look weird.

Thanks for all the help so far, when I get taxes back and I find all the parts, I'll probably be back in this thread asking for help lol
