One Gun ONLY.... Which One??

Yeah I saw that S&W as well. Quite a bit more $$ then the Colt unit, but exterior wise is almost identical to an AR-15 and I believe each and every AR part fits on it with the exception of your limited to the non-threaded barrel on most models. But the MOE version is probably cheaper then outfitting the Colt with similar parts. But the Colt M-4 Ops just looks cool although not completely accurate. I can't remember if the Colt has the Magpul Sights or not.

So far, as far as some suggestions have gone....
HK, agreed, I LOVE these but the price is too hefty.
Glock, I love the features but just don't care for the boxey grip, at least on the ones I've shot. who the heck designed these grips?
Springfield XD, i'll have to check them out
Kimber, haven't heard too much, still felt the best to me
I'd really like something with a 10+ mag capacity, but i'm not sure if I can even get that in CA

Legally in CA, nothing over 10 rounds. If one were to possess a disassembled Hi-cap mag purchased right over the border in Nevada though...that's legal.
I have a glock 19. Love it. Comes apart like a dream, fun to shoot. As far as the caliber debate, good shooting kills people not caliber. If you plan on never shooting your gun unless an intruder comes in, buy a .50 handgun, or get a shotgun. Otherwise, go with what you can shoot for cheap, eg 9mm or .40.
Just to throw it out there also, if you're into cool collector type stuff you could look for a CZ52 or a Tokarev pistol, both shoot soviet 7.62x25. Nothing is more bang for buck fun to shoot. Ammo is dirt cheap (half or less price of 9mm) and its a .30cal round that comes out of the barrel at 455m/s. Yeah. .45 shoots at 225 m/s, 9mm at 396 m/s. So kinetic energy is pretty dang good. And both guns run around $250-$300.

Surprising how many people choose hand cannons. If I had to pick one and only one, it'd be my ArmaLite M15A2 'Service Model' rifle.
Primary reasons are reliability, simplicity, parts/ammunition availability, and lastly because I'd rather be stuck with a big gun in a small space than with a small gun in a big space.
If I could have two, my 9mm Glock 19 would be my side arm. Again, reliability, simplicity, and parts/ammunition availability.
Just my $.02.

While she has good form, she uses to many chemicals.
On my two Glocks and my AR15 I use the CLP stuff.

It both cleans and lubes in one step.
No need for a separate cleaner and oil.

Only thing left to do it a flip up front sight, and maybe the Acog that I posted in the URL above.

Very nice. I'll eventually get a flat-top upper to deck out but there's something about the bare-bones service model that I love.
Good to see so many gun enthusiasts on this site. The more responsible law-abiding citizens with guns the better.

Three a**h***s tried to bust through my back glass door today when my wife was home with our 3 month old son. About the time they busted the glass all the way through my wife was at the door with her Springfield 1911. She told them to leave and they ran away, but things could have turned out way different. The cops never found them, big surprise, and nothing will ever happen to them. I am happy with what my wife said was about a 45 second response time once she called the police though.

I agree with you about having a rifle over a pistol...but...the OP asked for a pistol priced at $1K or under.

Missed that part...well if it was one and only one pistol I'd be tempted to go with a Desert Eagle .50 cal.

Just my .02.... Best handgun is what fits you well and you shoot well. Of course, reliability and function is a big part of it. I refuse to carry a cheap gun. I feel my life is worth too much to depend on something that might not work every time. I carry a Kimber Tactical Pro II .45. You can find these right around the $1K mark - maybe a touch more. I like this one due to the barrel length. It has a 4" so the accuracy is still there, yet it is fairly easy to carry concealed. Fits my hand perfect. I like Glocks and I do have a few, but, they just don't fit me like the 1911. My advice would be to go to a range and shoot some different guns prior to purchase. It's hard to get your money back out of one if it doesn't work out for ya!

One of my next guns will be the Ruger 10-22take down thread the barrel and a 22.g5 from gemtech and some decent glass. Think that might be a good one gun choice
