I have quite a few and love them all, but if you just want One, I would recommend a good Glock honestly. I shoot my Glock 22 .40 cal the most, and recommend it to all.

You can get that for around 500 new, you don't have to spend a grand to get the best out there.

I love HK's, and the new Springfield XD series are the , but they are pricey.

Nope, Best house gun ever is anything that has the Word Shotgun in it.

Slide the rack on a Pump shotgun on an intruder, and you're not going to have to fire most likely

Glock 19 for me. Comfortable to carry, I can shoot it accurately and its a Glock. My dad didn't clean his Glock 23 for 2 years and it shoot pretty well. Only had a couple FTF's the last time we shot and I finally broke it down and cleaned it. Glocks can take a beating and keep shooting.

Yeah, but 10mm is expensive to play with, 9mm is the cheapest followed by .40, hence why I shoot my Glock .40 more than any of my other's, of course, I don't own a 9mm, shot at people with my Beretta while on duty in the Hadjiland, and didn't have the knock down power I wanted....

I have a Baby Eagle (.40) and really like it. If I remember correctly it holds 12+1. Has a de-cocker safety and (forgive me I don't know all the lingo) where the slide runs it will not get you hand. Brakes down real easy, I love this gun...


My buddy has a .45 Glock, I really do not care to shoot this. I don't like the grip. One thing that does amuse me when he shoots 1 out of 4 casings comes back and boinks him on the head!!! That really makes me happy...

I searched and fired tons of different handguns before purchasing mine. I ended up purchasing a Stoeger 40s&w, very accurate, good balanced weight, not too heavy/lite, very smooth action, double action, adjustable trigger, can chamber a 357 sig if need be.

glocks( 9,40,45)- way too lite in my opinion, tons of snap, single action, didnt like the sights.
Beretta(9, .38)- good accuracy, smooth action, weight wasnt bad, didnt like the fit n finish
1911- proven time and again to knock down anything, didnt like the limited capacity, and round not as accurate over distance (bullet drop so you have to lob em in).
HK (40)- fired really nice, good accuracy, handled well, well constructed, good weight, good fit n finish. I just didnt like the price tag, i'm pretty rough on things and it would get damaged, and didnt notice much diff. between it and the Stoeger and would rather use difference in coin to buy my 12gauge winchester.

Overall i prefer the 40 round- flatter trajectory= more accuracy. and has knock down of a 45 but cheaper to fire and has higher velocity with = kinetic energy on target.

I agree with you on the 9mm..I was in the Army (oldfart) when we transitioned from the 45 to the M9...shot several thousand rounds through both guns...I would still love a 1911..you will be able to find parts for one 50 years from now.


Keep in mind with your $1000 budget that you are going to want 5+ extra magazine, ammo and a good safe.

I am guessing that for where you live it is a city, you have a golf course and a park and you won't be hunting.If you were I would go with a .357 mag but...

For personal defence and camping a .38 smith and wesson "chiefs special" five shot revolver is my choice. If used correctly it can take down a bear, and definantly anything smaller. also ammo is cheaper and more diverse. from armor piercing to incindiary. I shoot a Federal premium low recoil 110 grain Hydra-Shok Jacketed Hollow Point. this is almost identical to my gun:

Camping is typically pretty remote, for 3-4 days at a time. Weight savings would be nice, since some backpacking/hiking is always involved. Resistance to the elements is a great plus, but accuracy is by far my most important desire.

Like I said, no one talks about a Desert Eagle...Try the Baby Eagle (.40) if you can find one. Not too heave nice grip, holds more than 10 rounds.

Kimber does make a 10mm and according to reliable sources, it's a nice specimen. 10mm cam be an expensive cartridge, but if you 'roll your own' you can do it for about .26 cents each (assuming you have some well scrounged casings.....like I do. Hehe.). That makes it $13.00 for fifty instead of the confiscatory 35.00+ you find retail. Plus you can load combinations unavailable for retail sale....I'm just sayin'

I don't think I would be confident with a 9mm for protection in the woods/wild. There are too many wild and wooly beasts out there too large and determined to be discouraged by a 'bee sting'.

heres whats sucks for me . i carry my wheel gun 357 mag s&w, yes its not as cool as a auto but heck if you cant control the situation in 6 rounds ( ok i aslo have a speed loader 6 extra rounds) well by then all heck will be happening also its has some work done to it. just my 01 cents worth
