Knife talk - survival / camping knives
 

In the not too distant future, my brother in law, me, and a friend of ours are planning on a little camping trip. We plan to go all out and rough it; bring ONLY the bare essentials, and make use of the wilderness and what we can find around us to make it through 2 or 3 days. It's all just for fun :D

I'm needing to buy a new knife for the trip (will use it for various things, like prepping sticks into a bow and spindle so we can start a fire; no matches on this trip either :great:)


Everywhere I look, people seem to favor Gerber. But my brother in law has this Ka-Bar knife that his parents bought him after he came back from Iraq in the Marines. It's an awesome knife to say the least, and I've just about got my mind set on getting one. He has a commemorative Marines one, but the one I want is a model 5055


Any of you guys own Ka-Bar and can say more for it? Anyone have any other brands that they like?

Sorry, i have no opinion on knifes. All the ones i have owned have been cheap k-mart style knifes, or swiss army knifes.

Love my benchmade fixed blade, it's one of the pardue models.

KaBar hands down. It has the history to back it up. I carried my Kabar for 6+years while in the army. I beat the living crap out of it using it ways you should not. Have split small logs beating on the blade with rocks.
The leAther sheath is held together with dental floss now:D

I think you can get the new one with a plastic type sheath.

Another brand to consider is Benchmade.

I went ahead and went with my gut on this, and ordered the model 5055

not exactly the same as the USMC issued, but I like this Tanto design better

I've got a few more things I need to pick up before the trip; some 550 cord, probably bring a magnesium bar as a backup, JUST IN CASE... a new pack (my last one got ruined on my last camping trip... don't ask... it involves starting fluid, a lighter, and a huge spider :roll:), and I've got to find some other misc. stuff I've still got boxed up from my last move

I can't wait; it's going to be fun :D

yeah that stuff is AMAZING

we were screwing around with it and some random sticks on my brother in law's front porch a little while ago, making bows and starting friction fires; I made a crappy bow and arrow with it :hillbill:

one 3 ft length = outer string for bow string & inner cords for tying foliage to the tail of an arrow :roll: the things we do when we're bored...

it shot a good 20 feet; very inaccurate, and very NON lethal :lof:

ive always been a fan of Buck knives... always carry my 119 in my truck... dont much like the bling of it, but ive used it since i was 8 or so... also, my dad has always had Buck 110's around... in fact, hes still got 3 of them oiled up sitting in the boxes still... been there for about 10 years now...

O.k., you could whoop me in a knife fight.

But the best knife I've ever taken into the woods, or anywhere else is the Swiss Army Officer's Knife by Victorinox(currently called the Spartan). It has just the essential gizmos needed for any situation you'd wish you had a small blade or large blade knife/large or small screwdriver/can opener/bottle opener/wire stripper/awl-punch-reamer/corkscrew/toothpick/tweazers to get done. Which covers just about everything you could ever ask of survival/camping/utility/military issue knife or pocket knife. Yes, all this fits in your pocket. Damn handiest thing I've ever owned, and I DO NOT leave home without it.

I've lost 'er atleast three times that I can remember. But I'm willing to drive, and have driven, 100+ miles to go back for 'er. She's never let me down, nor shall I surrender her to anyone or simply leave her for dead. I've used it for every concievable task large or small. Woodworking, truck/vehicle repair, meal prep, skinning and gutting all manner of critter from a rainbow trout to several many deer a bear and an elk. The list goes on...
