towing , trailer brakes ?

Anyone know if the 98 sr5 runners had a trailer brake control wire anyplace ? I figure I need to buy the 60 dollar control box thing , just wondered if there might be a wire for it from the factory ? I'm towing a 22 ft camper with electric brakes , is the reason I'm asking , thanks .

I'm not sure first hand but I would say it doesn't. The controller box includes the wire for the brakes, and most times you have to wire up a 7 pin pigtail harness for trailer brakes not the regular 4 pin harness.

It would help to get more views if this was in the tech section not the build up section.

Yea I figure your right , I have the 9 pin and 4 pin combo harness, just wondered if they had factory wire , like some fords do . Thanks for your input

No wire for brake controller. You will have to run that yourself. Dont think toyota figured anyone pulling a trailer that size with a 4 runner.

Yea I hear ya on that one , 22 ft is large for the runner the trailer is only 3500 lbs , plus the top is on hydraulics that shrink it to half its height. I tow a 2000 lb boat and trailer almost daily with no brakes and can't tell its even there until I look back , but brakes on the camper would make me feel a little safer . Guess I'll look at the little brake box things at the auto parts store . Thanks . Anyone know of a name brand that's the best ? Or should I say " not a nightmare to install" ? Or should I look for one that's made by the same people that made my harness ?

It depends how often you will be towing. Some are basic and get the job done while others you can fine tune with different loads for electric brakes on a car hauler or something like that. Install should be pretty basic on any of them, wire colors should be standard so buying a matching brand should not be a concern.

Sweet , that sounds like the route I wanna go , do you know anything about running a wire for the 12 v + connection to keep things inside the trailer working , ie , fridge , lights , my owners manual for the camper says I can switch the fridge onto 12 volt mode when hauling and keep food cold , but I gotta figure out what wire on the harness does it , and wire it up . I had amps in my car before, hopefully I can use the power wire to wire it up . I guess the wire would charge the deep cycle in the camper ? Or the 12 volt converter ? Lol thanks for the electric brake help . Take it easy .

Your brake controller only powers the electric brakes when you press the brakes in your truck, to help you stop.

Yea I got that part figured out , thanks . I have another wire on my towing harness to run other stuff while in transit. Thanks for your help

I've never heard of a wire to run stuff in your camper from your vehicle. You could make one but that would put a lot of strain on your charging system and you would have to run some big wires to the back.
How far are you driving to need a constant 12v power source to your camper?

hoghead420 08-31-2013 12:27 PM

Probably from Ohio to California, stopping along the way for a day here and a day there , idk much about it . It says in the manual for the camper that I can kick the fridge into 12 volt , and keep stuff cold on the road , I do have a deep cycle battery in the camper so I think the harness 12 runs the 12 volt inverter/charger for the deep cycle , and all the 12 volt stuff inside stays running and the deep cycle stays charged off the 4 runner . Looks like I need to Google it up and see what's up .

Let us know what you find because I've never heard of anything like that

OK will do , might be a day or two . Take it easy
