96 4Runner 303,726 miles

Gave in and finally bought a new moo box, er, charcoal canister. While my box tested fine without leaks both of the vsv and vsv for evap valves were bad, one working intermittently and one not at all. Have not gotten codes for anything other than the (I think) unrelated P0420.

$206.06 + shipping from LaGrange Toyota for vapor canister #77740-35392
I went ahead and got the assembly because it comes with the 2 vsv's and my canister is almost 23 years old so I figured since the cost of the 2 parts I need costs:
25860-75140 $78.40
90910-12268 $118.12
(replaces discontinued 90910-12130)
Total: $196.52 for Toyota parts

Dorman makes a vsv for evap for around $42 but I didn't want to go aftermarket on this part. I don't think they have the vsv but I haven't looked that hard into it.

I also got a Check valve and grommet for the 99's brake booster. Super-stiff brake pedal when it's cold, doesn't want to stop. Apparently this is a common problem. Some people have mentioned cleaning the valve out but I went for the new part.

I'll try to grab pics when he replaces it.

Test procedures I used for vsv for vapor pressure sensor (on top of charcoal canister) and vsv for evap (on the side of the canister closest to firewall) and the canister itself

96 4Runner 303,730 miles

Threw a set of 639560 Russell speed bleeders on the rear. Would have done the front too but I went by the numbers recommended on the Russell website that says these are for front and rear of the 4Runner and fronts for the 05 Tundra. Should have crawled under there but didn't. Front are a very obvious mis-match. So far the only thing I don't like is the 7/16" nut. Really? On a metric part? The 11mm wrench fits but that's an oddball for the 4Runner. Small beans.

Well, the hubby's getting a set of 639560 Russell bleeders for his 4Runner rears, I'll have to order a set for the front next time, looks like 7x1.0, so a #639570 for my front 05 Tundra brakes. If anyone cares to confirm that would be awesome.

Hmmm. Just got an email that photobucket is hosting images for free again, but adding a watermark. If you don't want the watermark then it costs but the price structure has certainly changed. I'm curious so am testing it out with some random vacation pics and one of Bill's truck getting me out of a bind from my photobucket account. I don't trust that they won't do some goofy thing again, though. I've been getting emails from then with all kinds of different pricing structures, guess that first one didn't work out to well. I'll have to go look through some of those builds that had a lot of missing pics from the PB changes.

Bandolier, I think

Not a lot going on. Slight fuel smell on deceleration, that's driving me crazy. It comes in to the cabin via the vents but when I pop the hood I can't find the smell there.
Also there's a weird steering thing that's vague but not right somehow.
Went ahead and ordered speed bleeders for the front that should be here Thursday.
Had a great hike today at Hawn State Park which is an excellent place.
Afterwards I started the lawn mower when I got home and it sounded like popping corn so had to deal with that ^. Also pulled a squishy mouse out of the seat. That was pretty gross. I neglected to get a pic of that for some reason.

Good morning!

They completely freak me out! Mightymouse lost his pretty little pickup due to one. Will be looking hard for where the smell is coming from. It'd be nice if the smell would hang around long enough to sniff it out. Then again, how bad can it be if it dissipates so quickly it can't be found in the time it takes me to shut the truck off and pop the hood? I've looked under too, haven't seen any sign of leaks under the truck either. Will of course keep looking, something is going on somewhere.

On a different note, I came across a thread that showed my one of my potatobucket links in the edit screen but no pic. Was hopeful stuff would pop back up, even if it had a watermark, but so far nope.

My mom's old 1995 Nissan Maxima had a pinhole in a evap fuel line that opened up when cold- the rubber shrank. When it was warm out during the day it would close back up. Probably doesn't help though lol

Every time I smell gas or smoke I freak out and pull over and smell for anything- I guess it's just other cars because I never smell anything under the hood

The Evap. system is a good place to look. Did the fuel smell start when you were working on the vapor canister? Fuel vapor can give you the smell with no visible leaks (because it is not liquid).

About a month ago on my way home from picking up a new mattress, I had this pretty strong melting rubber / electrical smell on and off for the 10 minute trip back home. There was nothing else out of the ordinary, no loss of charging or power steering, engine ran fine, no overheating, no odd noises, no other problems. I get home, open the hood, and there was no smell at all, nothing out of the ordinary whatsoever. I thought it may be a car in front of me but I was not following any person for more than a minute at the start of the trip home.

The smell never returned. I have concluded that the smell was probably never coming from my truck, but not knowing for sure bugged me for a week.

Good luck!

Well I feel better that I'm not the only one paying attention to that stuff. Of course today it behaved itself. Maybe all I had to do is write about it!
It is warmer than it has been...I'll have to pay attention to temps when it happens, useful story Chuckles.
The smell did appear around the same time as the canister replacement old87yota. I did replace some cracked hoses too. The first place my sniffer goes is over the box but I'm not smelling anything specific there.
Usually it's 'What's that noise?!?'
Time to look at more of the lines and the fuel pressure regulator too.

I am not all that familiar with these, but it looks like a hose is disconnected on the right side of the canister.

Am I correct or do I need to keep looking?

This is like a game of "Spot the six Differences" in the Sunday Comics.

Wow, that's awesome. Also-
Where were you when I needed you?????
I'd pulled it to put the new bit of hose on the VSV for Evap to Canister (zip tie to help it form the 's' shape) and apparently didn't un-pull it.
The barb for it is directly under another hose where I didn't see it.

Hummm.... I don't know where I was....... definitely not near MO!

I had to zoom in on the picture and stare at it for a few minutes to see that the hose was not connected. Even then, I really did not know if there was a connection that I could not see.

To make it harder, take the pictures in the dark. We will probably never figure it out!

Yes, be glad it was something silly.

The problem could have involved a lot of work, such as:

"Step 1: remove vehicle body from frame........"
