Will Walbro pump help my ping at all?
 

I'm thinking of starting with the Walbro 190psi pump rather than go whole hog on the URD kit. Do you think just doing the pump will make any difference at all?

No it will not.

The High Gear/Low RPM-Ping (HG/LR-Ping) is not a fueling issue. It is an ignition timing issue. The fix for it is to retard the ignition timing where needed to supress the HG/LR-Ping.

The very best solution for this is the Split Second FTC. It will do what you need and later if you decide to install larger injectors it can handle remapping the fuel curve for you.

Is the Split Second FTC something an ordinary home mechanic can install? What is the effect on horsepower by retarding the ignition? I'm assuming it will decrease. As I've installed 285/75-16s recently I've already given up some power to the heavy tires.

Gadget - since I've got your attention, is the entire URD kit something a rookie like me can install? Would it be possible for you to put the instructions in PDF on your website?? That way, I could decide for myself whether I'm up to the challenge.

You will not loose power. If your engine is suffering from spark knock that is killing power as well as your engine. If you retard the timing just enough to cure the boost induced spark knock the you will not be loosing power. Hopefully it will improve as well as the service life of the engine.

The ping isn't horrible, I'm just trying to get the most longevity out of this motor. I'm heading to Indianapolis which about a 9 hour drive. Would adding an octane boost be good insurance against knock?

Sounds like you have the same problem as me. I get the occasional ping and want to get it cured to help my engine.

I bought a TRD thermo, but I haven't installed yet. I guess that's step 1 for me.

How would this apply to 99+ trucks w/o Cali emissions? Do all 99's have the new-style sensor?

Starting in 99 Toyota started putting air/fuel ratio sensors on the 4Runner. The Kali emmssions trucks got them the rest did not. In 2000 all 4Runners got them.

They did the same thing for the Taco starting in 2000 and then all got them in 2001.

A Kali truck can show up anywhere. There is a 2000 Kali truck about 5 minutes from me. He was convinced he has the Fed truck being here in Maryland and was puzzelled as to why the connection guide for the FTC would not line up. He had himself a Kali truck all the way over here on the right coast...

In 2000 Toyota used 4 different ECU boxes on the 2000 Tacoma. It does pose a bit of a hassell for making kits for them.

There is no sensor that measures humidity.

For your problem I would recommend the Split Second FTC. You can control both fuel and timing. Just remember once you max out the injectors there is nothing more that can be done with fuel.

You can retard timing as needed to supress any boost induced spark knock you may be having.

Later, you can add injectors and a fuel pump and take care of the fuel problem.
