Big Kahuna, you should actually get better mileage in moving up to 4.56 or 4.88 gears, shouldn't ya? It's basically putting your final drive ratio closer to stock in light of your big tires.... But one thing I can't understand is that with my taller tires I run at lower highway RPM's but lost 2mpg easily... in just going from 31 to 32's on a 98 3.4 auto... with 4.10's.... By the way, when I first got my 4runner I got 22 and even a tank of 24.6 on a long distance trip... My tires were damn there bald, probably making them a total of nearly 3/4 of an inch shorter in diameter.... Makes me wonder if a tire closer to 30" is optimum for my particular set up. Anybody else have similar experiences?

Angular momentum (For accelerating or braking) has a squared relationship. But I don't remember if that's for RPMs or weight or what.
There is an optimum to be found (Between tire size, engine rpms and weight) but who has the time for that?

Everytime I read through one of these threads, it seems like all other 3.4's get better mileage than I do.... I get roughly 14-17 mpg in town, 17-20 highway. I've actually only gotten 20 mpg on a full tank once. Truck is '03 TRD Xcab, stock.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but there is some missing information in almost everyone's posts, like what kind of engine oil/octane gas are you using what elevation/temperature are you taking your average at? My fuel sending unit is out and im not replacing it until my fuel pump goes so i am constantly calculating my fuel economy and after reading all of your avgs I'm not sure why im getting such better mileage. when i drove through IL,IA, and NE i was getting 26+ 5k feet+ its like 22 and city mpg is usally around 17-19. hard mtn driving i will get only like 14mpg(@ 7kft elevation) im running RP 5w-30 on 91 octane gas. flowmaster delta 50 with firestone destination a/t 265/70-16 and its a 3.4l all the averages were taken at cooler temps around 40 degrees or so

I dont think thats what the OP was going for.
Theres some serious honesty in this thread. And I mean that non sarcastically. Usually you get people claiming they get 27mpg out of there lifted big tired non geared exocaged monstrosity pulling a parachute at 90mph.
I get on average 17-19mpg in my 01 taco 3.4 with 33's regeared to 4.56.
But when I pull my camping trailer I get about 13mpg, or less. Which I thought was pretty darn good considering im 65% in the throttle trying to hold 65mph on the freeway, and 80% ish on a hill. Or 4K and half throttle, but it does it. Trailer weighs 3,000 pounds and has a parachute like shape, so lots of wind drag.

LOL. I have the stock tires on my truck, but it is 4wd (why would you by one that isn't?) and that 9 mpg came from me running at 80 mph on the freeway. The trailer is an enclosed 6x12 and is high enough that I can stand upright inside of it. I also keep track of my mileage on the pure gas app. I really wish I could find non-blended gas here in New Mexico.

Ya thats fast to be pulling. Im sure id get that or worse at those speeds. I stay under 70mph. Mines a camping trailer so its 7' wide by 16' long. Not sure how tall, but it catches alot of wind. Pulls real nice at 55mph but thats to slow for freeways.

These are amazing little rigs. Had to throw in my experience with a trailer.... I was cutting out my front lawn with a sod cutter. I borrowed a tandem axle trailer and just started loading. Didn't even think about the weight. Hauled it to the dump and it drove decent - even hitting freeway speeds. Turns out that I had 10,200 lbs with the trailer, and a tongue weight of over 900 lbs. Way overloaded for a 4Runner. I got lucky, but talk about an over-built rig!
Vfrman - my recommendation is to go with the 7th injector kit with the URD upgrade. Throw a URD 2.2 inch pulley on and that S/C comes alive! Of course your fuel mileage will go down a bit (or a lot as your right foot becomes very heavy). I get about 15mpg on 92 octane with 285's. Throw in a little methanol injection anytime I'm above 3lbs of boost just because Oregon premium isn't expensive enough and you have an expensive recipe for fun.
What do you guys do to extend the range when hauling? 14.4 gallons isn't much at our fuel mileage.
