What weight of Oil?
 

I have a 3.4L V6 and am getting ready to make my first oil change and have decided on Mobile 1, but had a question about the weight of the oil.

I know they recomend 5w30, but my experience with that weight oil in other V6's I have owned is 5w30 tends to be to thin and the engine uses about 1/2 a quart or more between changes, so I have been using 10w30 instead.

What wieght oil are people using out there?

I use 0w30 Amsoil ...

I use 5w30 Mobil 1.

I use 10w30 Mobil 1 in my 3.4L. It had 5w30 (probably dino) in it when I bought it and used about 1/2qt in the 3k miles I drove it. In the 4k miles since it's last oil change with 10w30, it has used none that I can tell. It doesn't get that cold here, so 5w30 is a bit light. However, I do drive in the mountains and it does get into the high 90s/low 100s here during the summer.

Movin on to Amsoil 0w30 at next oil change, as that seems to be the best stuff out there. Currently use 10w40 and the engine never loses a drop it seems. My$.02

I am a true fan of Amsoil products and feel their 0w30 is the best way to go. This is especially true if you live in colder areas, winter time, and/or if you do a lot of short trips.

Amsoil has two levels of synthetic oil: Their Series 2000, and their XL-7500. The Series 2000 is a 1/year or 25,000 mile oil and the XL-7500 is a 6-month, 7500 mile oil. It is recommended that with either oil, you follow the proper schedule of filter replacement. That means you would still want to change you filter every 5000 miles with the 25,000 mile oil. I'll admit, I don't change my filter, but I don't run the oil for 25,000 miles before I change it, either.

I have been running Amsoil for nearly 15 years and have been very happy with the durability of my engines. It is typically not recommended to switch from a natural oil to a synthetic oil in high mileage engines, since the natural oil can sometimes plug up small leaks. The synthetic oil will then come along and clean out the sludge and you will then notice a leak. I wouldn't worry about this on any engine under 100,000 miles, as long as it has been taken care of properly. I switched to Amsoil when I bougt a 1984 Honda Accord with 79,000 miles on it and it ran beautifully for many years, and even at 187,000 miles, it didn't burn a single quart of oil between extended changes.

I am running Amsoil Series 2000 0w30 in my supercharged 4Runner and don't leak or burn a drop of oil between changes.

10w40 (at least the dino version) is too wide of a gap, and the additives required to make the two weights work together actually attracts more dirt, making it a bad idea.

I just recently switched to the AMSOIL 0w30 as well. I just checked my oil yesterday and i have not burned up any, and it has been almost 10,000 miles. I need to change the filter though. Oh, does anyone know about how much oil i will lose when i change it (in quarts). Im guessing about 1/2 a quart?
