What should I look for? Buying a 92 Pickup
Noticed a Black 92 Pickup(Toyota obviously) for sale locally. I need a good means of transportation after I sell my other car(98 Eagle Talon). I am just getting out of college after this semester coming up, and need some $$ to pay off those college loans. 1992 still had the 22RE, correct??? It has no V6 badges.. 191k, 5 Speed. What should I look for besides leaks and stuff?
Also what should have been done on the truck..Timing Chain, etc???
Thanks in advance.

Besides the normal used car inspection stuff, listen for bad timing chain guides. It will rattle at idle if the guides are shot.
I am sure some of the 22re guru's will chime in...

not necessarily at idle. mine didn't anyways... rev it in neutral and you can hear the rattling of the metal chain if the guide has broke.
if the truck still has the chrome trim on the wheel wells, pull it off and see whats underneath. that's where the cancer nests.

No trim on it. I know what you mean though. My 86 Runner was victim of that..
Just talked to the guy. Regular cab 4X4. It has 191k on it, small amount of rust around 1 fender. Medium size dent on the back part of the bed. A friend of mine knows the guy. He just had it looked at by a mechanic, and had a bunch of hoses, wires, plugs, cap/rotor, and brakes done. He is asking $2200 obo. Good deal? It seems to be in very good mechanical condition. Besides the little rust on the fender trim, the underside is pritty clean.
Thanks for the help

Look for leaks at the front main seal, timming chain rev to about 2300 rpm listen for rattle especialy on decel (when chain gets slack), check fan clutch by turning with had before running motor (needs to turn freely when not hot), check exhaust manifold itself and the down pipe for leaks (the weld on the down pipe at the Y tends to break).
These are things that have been addressed on my 92 22re but not all have these problems.

The truck is acctually a 93...not that it makes a difference. I checked it out, and everything seemed good. Ran strong, brakes are perfect. Talked the guy down to $1500. Little rust on the front fender, but that can be fixed. Overall I think it is a good deal.
