Waskilly's post got me thinking about this......

I just checked my little sticker on the door jamb, and It says I should have 225/75(70?)/15's on there....Is that really likely? Is that sticker a tell all? When I got it last year it had 265/75's on OEM 16's....

The thing is, my runner has the sunroof and had the CD player, so I'm thinking with those two options would have come the 16" wheel package...Am I thinking correctly?

Also, I looked up my axle code..and found this...Which is realistic?

VZN185L-GKPGKA 3.909
VZN185L-GKPGKA 4.100 With P265/70R16
VZN185L-GKPGKA 4.300 Option

Any thoughts? Does everybody else's show the small size?


EDIT: The 15" wheel package came with smaller brakes, right? I dont see 15's fitting around my calipers...

Although I have an SR5 that comes standard with 31's, my label says P225/75R15. When you decode the axle/transmission code, you get a better idea.

So I went to a dealer and checked out some used runner's stickers. All of the stickers show exactly which tire/rim is currently on the vehicle. So I'm thinking that sticker is right, and my runner did indeed come with 15's and mini tires.

That also means I have some lovely 3.90's. :booty:

is having a 3.90 a bad thing? if it were an american muscle car or something, that would be awesome... most of them use something in the 3.73-4.10 range

3.90's just mean I could be getting a lot more from my truck...
It isn't really a dog or anything now, but apparently 4.88's are ideal for 285's. More power, somewhat better mileage? I mean, 15mpg isn't really cutting it anymore at nearly $2.40/gallon & nearly 30k miles/year.

You would get more power but I think you would get worse gas mileage as you will have to run higher RPM to go the same speed. If you have an auto tranny, 15 mpg is to be expected.
On your gearing, why didn't you just ask the service dept. at the dealer to decode your VIN? They do it for free ya know. My ID label got removed by previous owner, got a replacement this week for $10.
Look at your ID label on the door jamb, find the code that follows A/TM, this is axle/transmission code, mine looks like - A/TM G254/R150F. Then, go to this link http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/vin/ and look at the last table to decode your gearing ratio.
As I said, mine shows the P225/75R15 size but when you decode everything, my SR5 V6 came stock with 31's and 4.56 gears.

There are two different tags. Tags for Toyotas built in the US (vin starts with 4T) are different from the ones built in Japan (vin starts with JT.) If I remember right, all the id tags from Japan show only the base tires of 225/75R15. US tags show the actual tires that came with the option code.

Re your 3.90s. You shouldn't have 3.90s if it's not a 2wd... Should be 4.56s. If you're really running 3.90s with 285/75R16s, wow, you would love to have some 4:88s! More power more power more power.... Probably won't change your mileage, but it will be one heck of a lot more fun to drive. The engine won't be lugging all the time which will also increase its life, and the trans will love you for it. That's not too tall a ratio for 33" tires - it's just right.

That table confuses me thouroughly... According to that I would have 3.545's. Code A/TM A03A/A340F.

That site also confirms the 4.545's.....My VIN does start with JT, so my sticker could verywell be incorrect and my tires were port/dealer installed. I'll have my dealer check this out, because I've gotten way to much conflicting info on this. AHH, I'm so confused! :con: :con:

I was hoping you'd chime in! However, thats the first table I used (got it from your post)..and got the three answers from. That would help me if I knew for sure which tires came with my truck, but I got it with 153k miles! :eeek:

EDIT: I have a hunch I came stock with 16's. I bet I have 4.10's.

My take on it
 

After much reading and research on my 00 4Runner, this is my take on it:

SR5 w/ 15" tires, you got 3.90s
SR5 w/16" tires or a Limited you got 4.10s
Limited w/ e-locker 4.30s

I'd say you got 3.90s like me. No sweat, works for now, but when I get the ARBs put in I'll just regear too. I haven't decided on 4.88s or 5.29s, but I got some time to chew on it.

If your label says it came OEM w/ 15" then it did, but the dealer might have added the 16", so the gearing would be based on the 15" factory installation.

I wonder if that table is only good up to 95, 2nd gen. I bet that's the problem.
Dealer will be able to figure it out.
