Unsure of fuses needed for inverter install

Hey all

sorry if this isn’t the right spot to post this, I had a look in electronics and there was no relevant sub..

I just picked up a 1000W inverter for the 4Runner, and I’m a little unsure of what in-line fuse or fuses I need to install. The instruction manual is a little confusing, so I’m looking for a little clarification. It says to use a “30Ax4” fuse. Does that mean four 30A fuses in a row?

Thanks

In parallel for a total amperage 120A, not in series total protection is only 30A. However the fuses job is to protect the wires from melting so it needs to be sized according to the wire guage and shielding melt point.

1000 Watts peak or RMS?

This^^^
I would chose wire and fuse for "peak" current.

However, I would not wire fuses in parallel, unless they are designed, manufactured and assembled as a unit.

I guess Im just dumb and took that wording far too literally, and they are just indicating that for each model size going up you need a 30A bigger fuse, but it still seems a poor way of getting that across. I’m a meathead with electrical though (as I’m sure I’ve made more than apparent) so I appreciate the help guys.

Oh, and it’s a 1000 watt continuous / 2000 watt surge pure sine inverter. The other thing is that I’m increasing my wire from 6 gauge to 4 gauge to compensate for the 10’ I have to run from my battery, so do you guys think I should adjust my fuse because of that?

You should probably look for an appropriate sized circuit breaker, they use the setups in boats and tractor trailer trucks.

Wire size chart and calculator

Yes it needs a circuit breaker and inline fuse, an you might aswell add a 2nd battery and a battery isolator kit, you can build your own, I set mine up so I can connect the batteries when vehicle runs by a switch in dash to charge, and the 2 batteries disconnect automatically when keys are off so I only deplete the Accessories battery not my starting battery, I would go with a larger sized wire and secure it very well in protective loom, and you might consider a high Amp Alt in the future if you want to take advantage of the inverter.

thanks for the tip on the breaker, I hadn’t thought of that, great idea.

It’s definitely a mod I want to do... Did you manage to stuff yours in under the hood or do you have the 2nd battery stashed somewhere else?

I did put the battery in the rear driverside with the 2000W inverter as it was the shortest route for wires and both batteries connected and a VERY dry place for the inverter, and I mounted the 200A solenoid(battery isolator) for an in dash switch to connect batts back there aswell, it took some extra wires, solenoid 200A, circuit breaker 100A, 100A inline fuse and a relay but was well worth it, and I worked at a custom heavy equip shop so wire, connectors, crimpers and Elec Acc was at cost , I think I went 2GA or 0Ga though just incase, I did this about 7 years ago and ran a Rogers Wifi Hub so I could have internet during a trip across Canada and back for better service, maps and hotel bookings when cell service was non-existent, the good old days, still works great and I use the 2 batteries for plowing now. I opened the inverted and spliced into the 120V wires and mounted 120V receptacles with rubber covers in my console, Passenger side by shifter, and under the stereo by the lighter
