Transponder Key Ignition System
 

this is probably a dumb question, but how would i know if my '01 4Runner has the type of ignition system mentioned above?
My OEM key broke and I need to replace it.

anyone w/ any input? would there be some sort of chip or something on my key?

If you have a limited then you definetly have the chip key. Otherwise is your key grey or black? I think the grey keys have the chip, not sure. Do you have a key with none of the plastic stuff at the top? Try that and see if it starts, if it does then you dont have the chip.

My Limited has the transponder key. I was told the Black top was the master key, and it was neccesary to have it when programming a new key. They also said if you lose the master key, the entire system would have to be replaced (close to 2 grand) So, I am currently looking into getting some copies made, but at $70-$100 for dealer keys I'll search ebay first.
