Transmission Problems on 99 4Runner (2WD, Auto, 98K)
Hi folks,
I've had my 2WD 1999 4Runner for about a year and a half and I love it. I am developing a problem that is becoming rather serious, and I thought I might see if you had any feedback. The truck was taken care of, and it was immaculate when I bought it (still is), and to date it has 98,000 miles, no off roading (it's 2wd for goodness sakes). Lately, when I accelerate, the truck starts vibrating. and it is only when I am pressing the gas. It vibrates more at certain speeds, but it is a pretty consistent shaking when I lay on the gas at any time. I thought it might be the tires, but they are in good shape, and as the problem is worsening, I am now having a hard time thinking it would be the tires. When I shift into reverse, neutral, park, everything is great. When I shift into drive, I hear a ding like someone kicked a metal pail. Engine seems to run fine though. Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. |
Sounds like your U-joints on the drive shaft. Have they ever been lubed? If you have vibration & noise 1 or more may need replacement.

x2 on U-joints; they'll let you know when it's time to change em'.

Check the ujoints for play. On 2WD models everything is sealed (no zerks) so you cant lube the driveshaft.

Thanks so much guys, I'll check them out. Are these easy to replace for a novice, or should I take it to my mechanic?
Edit: It was the U Joints. Thanks so much for your feedback. A little over $100 to fix at my mechanic. Toyota quoted $350 just for the rear???!!!! |
