Transfer Case Compatable?

Just bought 86 4Runner which has had tranny & transfer case from 92 pickup installed. Problem is the transfer case shift lever does not fit the console. Looking at the top of the transfer case, it appears as though the shifter might be able to be moved to the rear position by changing places with the rear cover and the shifter. Both are 22 RE manual trans. I have not removed anything yet. Does anyone know if this will work, or if there are additional parts needed?

Not quite sure what you're ralking about with rear position...you might want to take a look at your old t case and see if it was top or foward shift then make sure you're new one is the same.

The transmission shifter will not fit the t-case. I'm not sure of the question.

on top of the transfer case is where the shifter is located. it appears there is a position to the rear of where the shifter is on the transfer case where it might be able to be placed. does the 4 runner and the pickup use the same transfer case? I get a pic.

It would depend on the year of t-case in question. I would like to see a pic if you have one.

Likely your old case was a top-shift, the new case a forward shift. Either convert the new case to top shift (see link below):

Of swap the old case (if you still have access to it) onto the new tranny, or cut a larger hole in the floor for the new t-case shifter.

yep, the shift rails are different so it isn't as easy as swapping the plates.

4 Crawler, your photos and explanation seem to show exactly what I have. I will try to get ahold of the old case. I have not seen this thing apart yet, just the view from the access hole in the floorboard. I've been out tracking down other parts to make the rest of the runner function properly. Thanks for all the advice guys.

a bolt-in case will come from an '85-88 pickup or 4runner with a 5 speed and EFI. '79-83 will also work, put with '79-80 you'll have to grind the splines a little and swap the flanges with the ones from your truck, and '81-83 you'll have to swap the flanges.
