Trail riding and mudding in a manual?
I was wandering if anyone trail rides, rock climbs, or muds in a manual. I realize it may be a little harder but is it still fun or to much of a hassle. Is it more fun because it is more of a challenge. Thanks.

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM almost all yota wheelers are Manuals. It helps on the trails in ways and also make it hard. Not to say theres no autos but youll see more manuals on the trail no question

Alot of the 3rd Gen huys here are auto simply due to the fact that there aren't many manuals around. I hear a lot of ppl prefer manuals though. Not really sure why though. I have a manual and to me it's a little harder to wheel in but then again I'm a noob wheeler!

manuals can rock or suck off-road...just depends on your situation...personally, i love the challenge of wheeling or muddin with my 5-speed...but welcome onboard man...:bigok:

Alright thanks guys. I just bought one. I think I am going to start with a 3" suspension lift and later on maybe put 2" of block. With the 3" of lift what do you suppose the biggest tire I can run will be on a 16" rim. I might just stay with the 265's that are on it and then when I put in the block lift I might get bigger. Thanks. guys. With the suspension lift is there any modification I might have to do besides installing the parts the OME 3" Lift 4Runner Coil Kit comes with.

Plenty of wheelers with either transmissions. All personal preference. The most important thing is just going out there and having fun.

i drive a 5spd manual offroad and i like it. i like the challenge of having to deal with one more thing, i also love the transmission braking, though you could do that in an auto too... i also like not having to have a tranny cooler! it is a little more difficult to slowly go up a real steep object (even in 4lo) without cooking the clutch, in an auto, the torque converter takes care of that for you

I have a manual in my 2000 and in my 89 4runners. I believe it's the only way to go, due ability to drop the clutch for that extra bit of power when you're bound up. Plus I feel the drivetrain way more with a manual, and that is very important.

I love driving my manual! I wouldn't have baught a auto because of my sheer joy of driving a manual...I like the more controlling feeling of a manual over an auto. It is easier hillclimbing with an auto i think. Not necissarliy easier but less stressful on the drive-train ie. the clutch.

I have a manual and i really enjoy it. The only thing is that when you are wheeling in 4 high it is really hard to not rub the clutch up hills and obstacles but 4 lo is pretty good. Also i'm not sure if your familiar with this technique but i have used it alot to get unstuck and it only really works with a manual: you pop the clutch in and out rocking the car back in forth in the mud and then when you feel you have a good momentum going you pop it in second while your on the swing forward and floor it....it gets you out almost everytime... good luck!!

its very fun. just be glad you have a hydraulic clutch. when i used to offroad in my old chevy, the clutch wasnt hydraulic, and it was a killer

Yeah, the only way to wheel is with a standard transmission. I've been out in my buddies Blazer (cuz he can't drive) and with an automatic its just not as much fun. I think its kinda like learning a video game on hard and then playing it on easy. Its not gonna be fun because its gonna bore you

You need: A SAS Weld both diffs. use 12" lift blocks 44" tires. V8 swap. |
Yea I do have a 3rd gen 1997 4runner. Thanks for the info guys. I had never wheeled in a manual before but it looks to be fun.

ive wheeled in both
my xterra is auto, i wheeled/mudded in it for a few years then i picked up my 89 runner, with a manual, ive only been out once in it and already manual is better hands down IMO |
not to mention how expensive it is to screw up the automatic transmission. I mean its worth getting rid of the car at that point than to fix it whereas a manual....different story. And automatics will usually at some point suffer some kind of failure whether it starts to slip or it needs some kind of a fix.
