Toyota Prado Y2000 5vz power loss
My 7y/o 5VZ engine had been running well , but started running like a dog, about 1 week before my vacation. No low end power, slow response to accelerator, surging, some muffler backfire, high revving before gear change, poor fuel economy etc. After a service (plugs,Oil+filter ) the air flow light came on, so I replaced the air filter. It ran OK , but then started running poorly again. I thought I had a bodgy plug or original lead/s , fuel filter etc. The car needed a transmission service anyway , so I took it to the Toyota dealer for an engine diagnostic + trans service ( quoted $299 ). I suspected the air flow sensor AFM, throttle position sensor TPS , Oxy sensor, fuel pressure regulator, throttle valve. The test showed the AFM was faulty. They wanted $920 AUD ( $850 CD ) for the part - highway robbery!! I found it at a wrecker for $150. If the part is easy to fit, consider a second hand part. The dealer said he could fix it for $550 ( obviously using a used part? ). I still haven't picked the car up yet, but I'll post again if there's more to tell.
