toyota frame recall strikes again

I took my 99 tacoma in for the frame inspection monday... i have always tried to keep my truck clean enough not to rust out. (living in winnipeg we have rough winters on vehicles) and always tried to keep the frame clean, but always noticed a few chunks of the frame coating come off when cleaning.

I assumed the inspection would get me a new coating on my frame.. and a day or two of inconvience. I was wrong.

Since my truck was dropped off at 8am, i went for a quick breakfast. The inspection only took 45 minutes, with the dealership calling while i was stuffing some bacon in my mouth.

The conversation was very quick.

"Your truck did not pass the inspection, there are holes on both sides of the rear crossmember. We have already pulled your regestration, and have arranged a rental. Come back to the dealership."

I was completley floored! it felt like being hit by a truck, my own.

I havent received my registered letter yet, but does how have other people faied in this position? I hear toyota gives a decent price, but i would still be happier WITH my truck.

Im torn now between buying a an 85 sfa toyota pickup, or a new 09 tacoma.

any suggestions?

A buddy of mine got $12k for his 99 ex cab 3.4l. You will get Kelley Blue book and a half for your vehicle in excellent condition...regardless of what condition yours is in. when i had my 95.5 tacoma i was praying for frame rust when i had a major electrical demon. No such luck for me.

When I worked at Toyota I think I remember there being an option of whether you wanted your truck to be recalled in or not. But if you do take the recall option it's some real good cash, like HazMat said kelleyBlue Book plus half in excellent and if you buy a new Toyota they through in like $2,000 more.

You dont have to choose. Just get the '09 and do a SAS.

My 95 Tacoma failed and they would not give me a rental saying the frame will pass NY state inspection and it is safe to drive. Also I spoke with ISG the people who will be buying back the trucks and they told me that if I get another rusted frame Tacoma, they may not buy it back due to many people take junk trucks and registering them on the road to get the money from the buy back program. Be forewarned in case some of you try this.

Hey Boardstar

How did you make out with your Tacoma
I also live in Winnipeg and just bought a 97 before I heard about the frame issue. I'm almost afraid to take it in...

Crazy..your from Winnipeg...so am I. Me and a few of my friends go off-roading all over. Tacoma/LandCruiser/4Runner's so when you get a new vehicle mssg me if your interested. That totally sucks about your truck, this city does use lot's of salt in the winter, my truck just got back from Jmax for rust proofing, I discovered my truck rusting away in the quarter panel's so I got it fixed asap along with new paint & fender flares. If you drive around Winnipeg now, older generation Tacoma's are a very rare sight since the recall. One of my friends had his truck taken away from the rust issue just within the last year, it was very hard for him to give up considering the amount of work he had put into it. Which dealership did the inspection? McPhillips Toyota? Its tough choice...a new Tacoma is very nice but costly. Depending on what they will pay for the frame damage you may be able to track down another similar model to what you had on ebay for a decent price. My friend is thinking about dropping the frame out of his 99' "which has already passed inspection" He just loves his truck soo much he doesn;t want to take the chance. I didn't think they pulled it off the road THAT...fast and contact MPI....but I guess they just get straight to the point...

Yeah I worked at a toyota dealership last summer and they told me about a story where they lifted a tacoma on the rack and the frame snapped in half, so Toyota INC. doesn't want to be sued over it.
