towing with the 4runner

I have a boat that i plan to tow with the 4runner. what mods would you recommend my boat and trailer probably weigh close to 3700lbs.

*Trans. Cooler
*Trans. Temp guage

I am sure you know but keep it out of Over Drive! I have heard our year has some possible issue with the tranny.

i pull a 5x10 utility trailer with a honda foreman on it. it weighs probably like 1200lbs all together. should i get a trans cooler and guage? if so, how involved is the installation of both.

I pull an 18ft bass tracker and i am not to worried about the guage or extra cooler. If i was to go any larger it would be a different story. Thor- I wouldnt worry to much about it.

where would i get a good trans cooler any write ups on the install

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned brakes yet, not entirely necessary to upgrade, but its good peace of mind.

You got it, start at the tranny; it's alway overlooked but they create a lot of heat when towing...

A tranny cooler helps all the time-not just when towing. Keep in mind that the radiator keeps the transmission warm-not cool. A separate cooler will keep it even cooler-after cooling the warm fluid.

After installing the cooler, I noticed that the transmission shifted crisp every time. Before-it was occasionally mushy.

Now when I tow (even loads I should not), no worries.

Transmission "fluid" is just light weight oil dyed pink. Would you stick that inside your motor? Sure...but not under heavy loads. Or maybe so?

I had a tranny cooler installed at my dealer it was pretty cheap too out the door i think i was under $250. I call it piece of mind. I tow my jet ski 900lbs and small bass boat which is not even an issue. The bigger deal is my POP up trailer which is 1200lbs... believe it or not it tows the POP UP BETTER THAN THE jet ski! I was always told to town with the OD OFF LIT UP. I do want a Sequioa though, but i guess i'd better learn how to spell it first.

Gilby,
I thought all you guys down there had rangers!! they are coming down in price now too... I thought of getting a BASS TRACKER.. How do you like it?

Like the rest said get a tranny cooler, i got mine for $50 and installed it in an afternoon. A gauge is also a good idea if you want.

Otherwise just make sure your truck is ready and tuned up. Do all the normal stuff, oil, plugs, wires, tranny fluid, diff fluid, check tires, check brakes, all that good stuff.

I have towed 5000lb+ a few times now and it has handled it fine each time with a tranny cooler and temp gauge (though i never had to stop due ot overheating).
