I was curious what is a reasonable price for having the tbelt done at my local toyota dealer or independant toyota shop?

what else should I have done while they have it apart?

For someone that knows what they're doing, it's probably a 3 hour job. A first-timer will spend the better part of a day on it. Around here, labor rates at the independents are running about $75/hour, so that'd be $225 in labor alone.

While the front cover is off, it's also a prime time to get to the water pump, and the thermostat is close by.


Are you looking to get this done 'cause of mileage or do you suspect slipping?

I would love to do it all myself, but my apartment complex would probably look down on that! I'm already going to piss them off by doing my rear axle seals. (I think!)

I am looking to have some of the major maintenance done before I move this summer, and drive it 2000 miles. (Not to mention I'm not sure how my funding for stuff like this will be after the move) I'll be at about 85-90K by the time I get the service done.

Yeah.. I know how the apartment thing goes. I did that for a year when I started working on my truck. I was semi-lucky though in that the complex was large enough to find a semi-empty lot to do the major work in.

2000 miles from Florida... Are you heading to CO/AZ?

In Houston the dealer that did mine charged $240 for parts and labor, that was back in 2000 though.

I had mine done at the dealer in 2002 with a coupon for $219+tax and some hazard disposal fee. That price included parts and labor. So about $240 total.

Keep your eyes peeled. Another thing you can do is call a sales advisor and tell ask them if they have any deals for a timing belt change. You would be surprised how many times I have got a deal just by asking that question.

I would just have it done by a shop that knows Toyota's and uses OEM parts. I had mine done at the dealer for those two reasons.

I just drove 2400 miles from Fort Lauderdale to Idaho. 4 days. Really fun and a pretty drive, I didn't leave anything in Kansas that I would want to go back for. No offense to anyone who lives on the Western side of Kansas.

Did the samething with my Timing Belt I had 90K and my mechanic did everything for $325.

AFter looking at the above prices... I think "stealership" does apply to my experience. They also changed breaks, and a few other things. I guess it was pretty fair.

You guessed it! CO it is; I can't wait to get back out there! (now theres just the whole getting a job thing! )

I called the local dealer and they quoted me $180 for the TBelt only. I called back and asked about the 90K mile service, including the "additional maintenance", and the price jumped to $800 (different guy told be the second price). Now $620 sounds like a lot for changing some fluids, inspecting some fuel lines, and re-packing the front wheel bearings! Time to call the local toyota specialty shop. (though my local dealer says they'll beat any service quote from another shop. Maybe I can get them on that?!)

the water pump alone is over 100 bucks and the tbelt is 240 parts and labor. the extra time it took to install the water pump probably made up for the rest, I'd call that a good deal.

I thought the wheel bearings were sealed and only a replacement item?

I'm not sure on that one. I'm just going by the 90K mile service guide from http://techinfo.toyota.com/.

they are sealed on a '98. that's a general maintenance list. they aren't serviceable only replaceable.

if that 620 includes "replacing" the wheel bearing on both sides then it sounds like the right price because it's quite labor intensive. Why do you think they need servicing anyway?

I don't, I was just getting a generic price for some generic 90K service. I'm not about to pay $800 for stuff I can do myself or don't even need at all.

The $180 for the T-belt is more what I was curious about.

Like I said, it sounds right if it includes "replacing" and not "repacking" the wheel bearings since that would be impossible on ours. 800? I thought it was 620. if it's 800 then I would agree with you.

the t-belt price sounds like a good price to me. like it matters what I think.

I just got a quote yesterday for the Timing belt and the water pump. Out the door it would be $620, but the manager said she'd hook me up with some discounts since I go there so much hehehe..

fwiw... Back in April I bought a new OEM water pump and timing belt from a dealer for $92 and $34 respectively.

Anything someone's charging you past that is labor and (more) profit.
