Timing Belt - If it goes will it destroy Motor?

Hello everyone,

I want the answer to a good question???

I have read on this board that if the timingxxxxx (BELT) goes on the 3.0L V6, that it will not destroy valves pistons, etc.... because of the motor design....

I have a gentleman that my fathernlaw new, whos timing belt went, and it completely mucked his engine up... To the point where he had to get a completely new motor.... Which he just opted to sell the truck for 5k..... This was back in 91 or 92.....

I have a 22re in an 1986 4x4 where the chain jumped a tooth after the valve guides broke, and I had to replace 3exhaust vavles and one intake valve...... VERY FORTUNATE.....

Thanks everyone,

Mike:confused:

Hi Mike, see this post also.

The 3.0s do not use a chain.

Hokiez97 01-27-2003 07:23 AM

the 3.0 definitely uses a belt

Hey Corey,

My post may have been misunderstood..... BECAUSE I AM A 'DA' not paying attention to what I type moron!

The price listed is for a timing belt replacement on a 3.0L V6 motor here in VA.

The 22re has a Chain, I was just referring to my problems associated with a Timing BELT / CHAIN malfunction.

I should have made it clearer!

My understanding is... If the motor is an interference type i.e. the piston/ valves share the same space, a hic-up in the timing system will usually bend, brake, basically tear s*** up. If the motor is a noninterference i.e. the pistons/ valves are always clear of each other, the chance of engine self destruct with a brakage/ skip in timing system is less likely but can happen. I know the 22Rxx engine family is interference as for the V-6 someone else on the board should know

Try this ? Is the 3.0 an interference engine?

No its not. Breaking a timing belt does not cause engine damage. Just put a new belt on it.

Please explain...

Hey Jay,

Please explain why nothing would happen if the timing belt broke driving down the road.

Does the difference between Automatic and Manual transmission have anything to do with it??

Thanks,

Michael

the 3.0 is a "non-interference" engine. if the t-belt breaks, it is designed to not interefere with or damage any other parts.
