Tacoma Double Cab Suspension
 

I have a 2001 Tacoma Double Cab with the TRD off road package and the ride is not very good, its pretty uncomfortable. Over smooth roads its fine but over bumpy roads its not, it seems too stiff, this may be good for off roading but I dont do much of that so I just want a smooth, stable ride. Has anyone changed the suspension on their TRD double cab, I'm not sure if just the shocks would do it or if I would have to replace the springs too, what do you guys reccommend as far as replacement parts, could I just go with stock tacoma (non TRD) suspension? Also...is there an aftermarket rear stabilizer bar out there for it, I'm not sure if 4Runners have a rear one but they do feel a lot more stable...very different handling from virtually the same truck...

I'll take a stab at this.
I don't have a Tacoma, but I have read many a time in the past that the TRD shocks that are part of your TRD package are thin, and not the same as the Bilstien aftermarket shocks.

The TRD ones may say Bilstein on them, but they are way different than the prefered ones that 3rd gen 4Runner owners and truck owners switch over too.

For the more heavy duty (which will make it ride better) Bilsteins, check with Performance Products, Central 4WD, and Shox Dot Com.

i love the Tacoma double cabs. i was at the dealer the other day for a minute and was looking at them, they are awesome. if there was one rig i would rather have besides my 4R, it would be a double cab taco.

having said that, get some billies.

Better buy one before Toyota screws that up as well ... like they did with the embarrasing 2003 4Runner.:P

The revised edition later this year of the Tacoma will be sportin' that 4.0 V6 the '03 4Runner is getting later, and also the 4 door cab will have a full size bed instead of the short one.

If I was going with a new rig, it would be a white TRD Taco, with 5 speed.

Rear Stabilizer Bar
 

Is there an aftermarket rear stabilizer bar for the tacoma? Or if the 4Runner has one, would it fit the tacoma?

The rear suspensions are totally different between 4Runners and Tacos. 4Runner has coil springs, panhard rod, control arms, swaybar. Taco has leaf springs. Really no similarity between the 2. Maybe you want a stiffer front swaybar if you want less body roll side to side. Addco is a popular choice for that. I haven't heard anything about am aftermarket rear swaybar for Tacos.

I think what you call a stabilizer bar is what I call a swaybar. Maybe not, oh well.

Everyone raves about Bilstien shocks so they must be good. Maybe those fancy SAW Racerunner coilover front pogo stick thingamajigs could make your ride better. Rancho 9000 series shocks have manual adjustment so you can dial in your ride firmer or softer as you wish. I haven't heard much about how people like them though.

How about a lift kit
 

Would it be better to just get a lift kit like the Revtek 3" kit and perhaps that would improve the ride since it includes longer/different rear shocks and lift it at the same time.

Otherwise I will probably just replace the TRD/Tokico shocks with Bilsteins and get new springs to lift it. What would be a better way to go as far as ride comfort and stability.

I beleive Rob is running the Revtek lift on his '01 Tacoma.

When I saw his rig in August at a meet we had at my local dealer his rig sat lower.
I think he just had the Revtek then.

He now has it and a 3 or 4" lift added to it I think. Gene and Mike here would know the details more of it.

When I was looking to test drive a vehicle equipped w/ Bils, I went to the dealership and test drove a TRD Bilstein equipped Doublecab. I was not impressed. I thought my lung would pop out after going over one speed bump! It was too bouncy/rigid. After talking w/ a few guys on the board, they said that the Bils on the Taco is different than the ones you'd buy in the aftermarket.

I couldn't agree more. I love the Bils I bought from Performance Products. Its like night and day. I recall going over to Tacoma Territory and reading that most if not all those guys ditch the stock Bils in the Tacomas and buy the ones from PP or Shox.com.

wow, wow, nice tacoma. i need a lift!! :) i like the way the ARB looks too. but the TJM will be sweet too.
